Summer - Summer - Summertime!

Are you ready for summer sun and fun? Our young friend in the photo above is most definitely ready! If you are wondering about our summer programming we are excited to let you know that in addition to our regular Open Studios and workshops, we will be adding the following:

  • An extra workshop every Wednesday morning from 9:30am-11:00am. We have started posting these extra workshops for June and will continue to post them over the coming weeks.
  • An additional Open Studio block each Friday morning from 9:00am-12:00pm. Stop by during Open Studio and get your creative juices flowing for only $5! No pre-registration required.
  • A bunch more sewing workshops in June (take a look below for more sewing workshop information).

Sunday Afternoon Workshops

We have lots of fun and educational Workshops on Various Art Topics coming up on Sunday afternoons in May. Spaces are limited so register today. Each workshop listed below will take place from 2:30-4:00 pm on a Sunday afternoon.

  • Flowers for Mom, May 10, ages 5 & up, $15 - It's Mother's Day! Paint your own flower still life in the style of the famous Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. Learn about van Gogh, his painting techniques and his use of colors by exploring, experimenting and creating your own work. A perfect gift for you-know-who!
  • Perspective & Value Ocean Painting, May 17, ages 5 & up, $15 - Explore perspective and value in art! We will learn about how perspectives can let us show the different dimensions of our ocean world and paint great depths and distances. We will find inspiration in the many animals that live in the ocean.
  • Ceramic Planters, May 24, ages 5 & up, $25 - Let's get summer started by making our very own ceramic planters! Using clay, tools, and colored slip, students will create a small planter and learn different ceramic surfacing techniques. The final product will be fired and returned with a live plant on a later date.
  • Tape Images, May 31, ages 5 & up, $15 - There are more ways to create fun and interesting pictures than drawing and painting. Using electrical tape, paper, and scissors, students will create a complex image of their choice. We will learn about cutting different shapes and angles and problem solve to put our cuttings together to make one larger image.

Try Your Hand at Summer Sewing!

Our sewing program is heating up this summer! Because lots of keiki will be out of school, our wonderful instructors from ME+U are adding a bunch of extra sewing workshop options in the month of June. That means more chances for you to try your hand at this wonderful art form. Make something practical, make something adorable, just be sure to learn how to make something this summer!

Keiki & Teens Needed to Help Create Kaimuki Mural

Our friend Molly is organizing a really cool large-scale Kaimuki mural project at the freeway underpass on 10th Avenue between Pahoa Avenue and Harding Avenue. She has enlisted the support of Estria, an internationally recognized muralist from Kaimuki and the co-founder and Creative Director of The Estria Foundation. They are looking for high school, middle school, and older elementary school students from the Kaimuki area to get involved! Interested? Please join a meeting on Monday, May 4 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm to begin designing and planning the mural. The plan is to meet at the underpass, then walk over to Kaimuki Park. Snacks will be provided. For more information, email kaimukimural@gmail.com. And please spread the word to students who may be interested in getting involved!

Description
Nurturing tomorrow's creative thinkers

Art Explorium provides a fun, safe place where children of all ages have the opportunity and the permission to create freely. We firmly believe that art experiences are an important part of every person's growth and development. So... WE provide the space and materials, YOU provide the ideas and make them happen!

Art Explorium strives to be an eco-friendly organization. Many of the art materials in our studio are items that would normally be thrown in the landfill (old pieces of fabric, used bottle caps, small boxes, magazines, ribbon, etc.). We collect these used materials from our friends and local businesses, and Art Explorium visitors give these items a new life as art.

We offer art classes, birthday parties, and field trips to our studio. We also offer Open Studio time - come on in with your family and dabble in one or all of our art stations which offer activities like painting, sculpting, drawing, making mosaics and more. See you there!
