The Letter (Japanese film with English subtitle, 2006)
"How have you been?" The letter always begins with this familiar phrase. Takashi sends a letter to his younger brother Naoki every month from prison.
Takashi is serving a life term for a crime done out of desperation to help his younger brother succeed. Instead Takashi's crime haunts and torments Naoki as he is branded "the brother of a murderer" by society. This stigma deprives Naoki of his future, love, and even his dream. Thus, the hate felt by Naoki toward his brother is heavily depicted in this film. However Naoki realizes that he still has a future and can still pursue his dreams with help of his devoted friends and his wife Yumiko, who always stands by him. Through this redeeming experiences, Naoki realizes the sacrifices his older brother has made for him and one day decides to write a letter to him in forgiveness.
This film is tale of one person's journey to overcome his irreversible fate and find the true meaning of family.
