Description/Comments
The Reverend Yoshiaki Fujitani Interfaith Program, established at Chaminade University of Honolulu, will offer hands-on workshops and lectures in clay and calligraphy on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Ching Conference Center, on the second floor of Eiben Hall on Chaminade's main campus. Titled "Arts and Spirituality," the program features renowned ceramic artist and "Living Treasure of Hawaii" designee Yukio Ozaki of Chaminade University and master calligrapher Reverend Eijo Ikenaga of Honolulu Myohoji Temple. Professor Ozaki and Rev. Ikenaga will lecture on the influence of spirituality on their art, demonstrate their individual art forms and encourage participants to express their own spirituality through their art.

Yukio Ozaki, professor of fine arts at Chaminade University of Honolulu, began teaching at the University in 1986 and was named the 1998 Hawaii Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. Born and raised in Tokyo, Ozaki earned a Bachelor of Arts at Gakushuin University in Japan and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Equivalency Degree and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He was named a Living Treasure of Hawaii in 1994, by the Honpa Honganji Mission. During the last twenty years, he has won numerous purchase awards from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) commissioning him for his pieces for various state buildings.

Rev. Ikenaga arrived in Honolulu in 1958 from Saga-ken, Japan to be installed as the resident minister of Honolulu Myohoji and has served there for nearly 50 years. Rev. Ikenaga has taught "Shodo" or calligraphy as a non-credit course at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has also taught calligraphy at the Honolulu Myohoji for nearly 25 years, encouraging many generations of Buddhists and non-Buddhists to express their spirituality on paper. His mastery of the writing reflects his interconnection with the universe and self-discipline.

Advanced reservations are needed. Fees will help defray the cost of materials for the workshop and lunch according to the following breakdown:

Full Day (9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.): Advanced registration fee for calligraphy lecture and workshop, ceramic lecture and self /clay workshop, continental breakfast and lunch, $50. Students $25.
