Push aside the cranberry sauce and pick up your check book as The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise hosts its fifth annual Wine and Turkey Fundraiser 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 9, at 3660 On the Rise. Renowned chef Russel Siu will pair various wines with a number of original, turkey-based hors d'oeuvres while club members and guests participate in a silent auction to benefit the Roosevelt High School Senior's Scholarship Fund and the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise Foundation. Every year, Chef Siu and his staff serve heavy hors d'oeuvres featuring turkey as its main ingredient as the silent auction takes place. "He shows us how to use Thanksgiving leftovers in a creative way," club president Dave Erdman said. Last year, for example, turkey tacos and enchiladas were served, paired with specially selected wines. "No one goes home hungry," Erdman said. Though tickets to the club's largest event are limited to 200 attendees, the silent auction raised over $15,000 in 2005. Items included a sushi bar party for 30 people, a sunset sail off Waikiki Beach for four on the 33-foot sloop "Awesome Possum," one night in an ocean-view room at the Halekulani Hotel, and a variety of rare wines. All proceeds were donated to Roosevelt High School through scholarships for senior students with financial need. Tickets are $75.00 at door, and 65$ before October 24 and can be purchased through the Rotary Club office at (808) 847-0141. The Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunrise celebrates 17 years of service to the community this year. Twice awarded for the District 5000 "Club of the Year," its 65 members of various vocations and ethnic backgrounds are committed to serving others. The club works on a number of different projects that benefit the youth and the community each year.
