Description/Comments
Co-author of Farewell to Manzanar and author of The Legend of Fire Horse Woman, Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, will share her experiences on the internment of Japanese during World War II at this JCCH event. Both books will be available for purchase, and Houston will be signing her publications.

Houston co-authored Farewell to Manzanar and based it on her family’s experience during and after World War II internment. Houston’s essays and short stories were first collected in Beyond Manzanar: Views of Asian American Womanhood.

The Legend of Fire Horse Woman, published in 2003, is her first novel. Houston explores the life of a woman, born under the portentous Fire Horse sign in Hiroshima, Japan, who is married by proxy and sent to join her new husband in America. In 1942, this same woman is sent to a Japanese internment camp with her daughter and granddaughter.

This event is presented by the JCCH Hawaii Confinement Sites Committee, a volunteer group that was established this year in response to a bill in Congress that, if passed, would preserve World War II internment and relocation sites throughout the nation. The committee will lead the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai‘i’s effort to help pass the bill and maintain former internment sites in Hawai‘i, such as Honouliuli.

The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH), a non-profit organization, strives to strengthen our diverse community by educating present and future generations in the evolving Japanese American experience in Hawai'i. Located in Mo¯'ili'ili, the Center features a Community and Historical Gallery, Resource Center, Kenshikan martial arts do¯jo¯, Seiko¯an Japanese teahouse and Gift Shop. For more information call (808) 945-7633, email info@jcch.com or visit the website at www.jcch.com.
