January 28, 2007

Experience Ancient Hawaiian Sports just minutes away from Waikiki

Sponsored by the Waikiki Beach Marriot Resort & Spa, the Ala Wai Challenge is fun filled Sunday, featuring outrigger canoe racing and ancient Hawaiian Makahiki games at the Ala Wai Neighborhood Park and Clubhouse near Waikiki. Admission is free! There are also a variety of handmade Hawaiian crafts, free entertainment, and a variety of food vendors at the event. You can also experience authentic "Lomilomi" (Hawaiian massage) and "La'au Lapa'au" (Hawaiian medical herbs).

The outrigger canoe race is a Î mile race along the Ala Wai Canal, which is open to all skill levels. The race is a sight to see! The race is a double elimination, having winners and consolation brackets so all teams race twice.

The Hawaiian games feature the 'Ulu Maika (bowling a round stone through pegs), O'o Ihe (spear throwing), Moa Pahe'e (dart sliding), Pohaku Ho'oikaika (stone throw) and Huki Kaula (tug of war). This is one of the few events on Oahu where you can experience the ancient sports of Hawaiian culture known as Makahiki.

The event kick offs with a double-hulled canoe procession, in oli' (chant) and Kahiko (ancient hula and song) by the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Ensemble class. Following the opening ceremonies, there is a special line-up of entertainment.

This year's event is in honor of two living surf legends and life long environmentalists, Peter Cole and Fred Van Dyke. Both pioneered some of the biggest wave riding contests on the North Shore and continue to surf and participate in civic and community events.

A number of parking lots are available in the surrounding neighborhood and parking structures around the event. From Waikiki, you have a variety of options. The organizers have set up the famous "Canoe Taxi Service" in specially marked double-hulled canoes. Look for the pick up areas near the Kalaimoku and Olohana streets crossing Ala Wai Boulevard. The free canoe taxi service is from 9:00 am -- 12:00pm. There will also be a free trolley service provided by Enoa's Waikiki Trolley. Trolley pick up will be every 30 minutes with two stops in Waikiki, one at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center across the Ohana Beachcomber Hotel and the other at the bus depot at the Waikiki Beach Marriot Resort & Spa. Trolley service runs from 8:00am to 1:00pm.

The event benefits the Waikiki Community Center, a private not for profit organization that began in the late 1960's as a ministry project for the Hawaii Council of Churches. The mission of the center is to meet the diverse needs of Waikiki and to provide a warm, refreshing and stimulating environment that will enhance the lives of its participants.
