Description/Comments
As 1st Lt. Ehren Watada faces a court martial on Feb. 5 to determine his fate as the first commissioned officer to publicly refuse deployment to Iraq, many in the Hawai'i community have expressed varying opinions for this 28-year-old's decision. Many may still be conflicted on how they view this issue. In an effort to provide the public with an opportunity to learn more about the events leading up to Watada's court martial, the JCCH will present this panel discussion as the sixth installment of its Japanese American Social Issues Series in Hawai'i.

Moderated by JCCH President/Executive Director, Judge Riki May Amano (Ret.), the panelists include Jonathan Okamura, Ph.D., associate professor of ethnic studies at the University of Hawai'i at Ma¯noa; Karen Nakasone, former president of the Japanese American Citizen's League Honolulu chapter and deputy public defender for the Office of the Public Defender and Ernie Kimoto, senior staff attorney, Office for Hawaiian Affairs and former judge advocate for the U.S. Marine Corps.

The JCCH's Japanese American Social Issues Series in Hawai'i debuted in 2004. This series of forums is intended to generate dialogue on contemporary issues of concern and interest to the Japanese American community. Panel presentations are made by individuals with experience on the topic and the audience is encouraged to contribute their thoughts.

Name of presenting organization: The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, strives to strengthen our diverse community by educating present and future generations in the evolving Japanese American experience in Hawai'i. The Center features a Community and Historical Gallery, Resource Center, Kenshikan martial arts do¯jo¯, Seiko¯an Japanese teahouse and Gift Shop.
