The Fujitani Interfaith Program at Chaminade University Presents
"FEAR OF THE DIFFERENCES"
The Fujitani Interfaith Program at Chaminade University of Honolulu will host its spring Fujitani Lecture Program entitled "Fear of the Differences" from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sat., Feb. 24, at the Ching Conference Center located on the second floor of Eiben Hall on the Honolulu campus of Chaminade University at 3140 Waialae Avenue. The program will feature Dr. Duncan R. Williams, associate professor of Japanese Buddhism at University of California, Berkeley, as its special guest lecturer. Dr. Williams will speak on "Japanese-American Buddhists and the World War II Internment Camps."
An ordained Buddhist priest in the Soto Zen tradition, Dr. Williams received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and has served as its Buddhist chaplain from 1994-96. Currently he is working on his book, Camp Dharma: Buddhism and the Japanese American Incarceration during World War II to be published by University of California Press.
Film producer Tom Coffman will also introduce his documentary film "The First Battle," which focuses on the two years leading up to World War II internment camp years from a Hawaii angle.
In addition, Reverend David Hirano, interim senior minister at Central Union Church, will present his reflections on his father's internment experience. Reverend Dr. Kenneth Tanaka, president of the International Association of Shin Buddhist Studies, will moderate a panel discussion on the implications for today with Hakim Ouansafi, president of the Muslim Association of Hawaii and Dr. Jon Van Dyke, professor of constitutional law at William S. Richardson School of Law, University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
The program, which includes refreshments, costs $20 with advance registration by Feb. 17, or $30 at the door. Cost for students is $10. Please make checks check payable to Chaminade University.
