 The Nutcracker is a ballet by Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1891-92, and based on the The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, a story by E.T.A. Hoffman (1816). Generations of audiences have enjoyed this perennial Christmas favorite, a charming tale of holiday adventure that follows a little girl's journey through a fantasy world of fairies, princes, toy soldiers, and an army of mice. It is appealing to children and adults alike and has been the standard yearly feature here in Honolulu performed by the students of Hawaii State Ballet Company, and directed by Mr. John Landovsky for almost 20 years.
