 Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks’ classic cult comedy film. Now as a Broadway musical, THE PRODUCERS once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor.
The plot is simple: a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer, Max Bialystock, and his mild-mannered accountant, Leo Bloom, come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby bilking their backers (all “little old ladies”) out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The antics of Bialystock and Bloom as they maneuver their way fecklessly through finding a show, hiring a director, raising the money and finally getting caught, is a lesson in broad comedy. The musical highlights include: "I Wanna Be A Producer", "That Face", and "Springtime for Hitler".
With a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Mel Brooks, the DHT production is directed and choreographed by John Rampage, and is under the musical direction of Emmett Yoshioka. The cast features: Dennis Proulx as Max Bialystock, Don Nahaku as Leo Bloom, Daniel Kunkel as Franz Liebkind, Doug Scheer as Roger Debris, Twan Matthews as Carmen Ghia, Renee' Noveck as Ulla, and Jim Price as Stormtrooper.
The ensemble includes: Caryn Yee, Sara Yeo, Autumn Ogawa, Leslie Detor, Heather Taylor, Yvonne Yanagihara Goss, Andrea Lopes, Lisa Konove, Judy Yoshioka, Chelsey Jensen, Shea Reiner, Mariko Lyons, Denby Dung, Darah Dung, Chris Villasenor, Don Richards, Kyle Malis, Justin Hashimoto, Levi Oliveira, Myles McGee, James Kaona, Larry Whitson, Kenji Higashihama, and Friston Ho'okano.
The creative team is comprised of set designer Willie Sabel, costume designer Karen Wolfe, lighting designer Stephen Clear, sound designer Mikel Humerickhouse, make-up and hair designer Jess Aki, props designers Willie Sabel and Vincent Green, tap choreographer Caryn Yee, and production stage manager Theresa Riedman.
THE PRODUCERS will run from May 16 - June 8, 2008 with shows at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and at 4 p.m. on Sundays. Saturday matinees at 3 p.m. are on May 24 and May 31. Single tickets are priced from $12 to $42, with discounts available for full time students, seniors 62 and older, and active duty military. Call 733-0274 to charge-by-phone.
