Interisland Terminal is a community initiative to cultivate innovation and creative capital in Hawaii through on-going exhibitions and authentic experiences of international contemporary film, art and design.

For the inaugural exhibition of its contemporary art program, Interisland Terminal presents the work of Belgian artist Rinus Van de Velde (b. 1983). Rinus will be creating 2-4 original works on site July 10-15.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: RINUS VAN DE VELDE
Van de Velde is a young artist who works in the most democratic of media - drawing. Most of us begin our early explorations of creativity through drawing, whether with sticks dragged in the sand to make lines and shapes, or crayon scribbled on paper. These early gestures are immediate and entirely physical.

The large drawings in this show necessitate a retention of that physicality. Made with charcoal on simple cotton rag paper, the materials employed by Van de Velde return us to the tools we start with as artists.

The opaqueness of the charcoal shows this paper has been worked with the artist's whole body. The viewer, too, is enticed to consider the life-sized works through the physical act of moving close-up for their lush texture, and afar for their full-impact of the text + image pairings.

For Van de Velde, drawing is a daily practice beginning with images from his personal archives. The drawings included in this exhibition were inspired by 1950's and 60's National Geographic magazines and the Geographic Explorers' attempt to reconcile a search for authenticity with a specific ideology of discovering and structuring the new, the exotic. Throughout his work, Van de Velde includes his own statements in handwritten text framing the images. He says, "It's important that I put myself in (my work), that I pretend I was there, somewhere between the reality and the myth."

Van de Velde lives and works in Antwerp. Interisland Terminal is proud to present Van de Velde's first solo show outside of Europe, which will be followed in December with a selection of works in the Statements program of Art Basel Miami, for which he was recently selected. He is represented by Galerie Zink in Berlin and Munich.

MORE ABOUT INTERISLAND TERMINAL:
Interisland Terminal will present a year-round, on-going series of exhibitions to explore the intersections of creativity, innovation and leadership, thus paving the way for the creative approaches needed to address the civic and social challenges facing Hawaii.

Though there are many arts and culture organizations in Honolulu, INTERISLAND TERMINAL remains unique in its stands for strong curatorial independence, cutting across all media, and with an emphasis on design unfound in existing local organizations. The organization's creative direction is truly hybrid and international - simultaneously located in Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York, and with a footprint in the Asia-Pacific and in Europe.

Interisland Terminal is a project currently housed under Community Link's Hawaii's non-profit incubator program.

COMING THIS FALL
Following this exhibition, Interisland Terminal will be presenting a program of Rock 'n Roll cinema at partner venue Consolidated Kahala Theaters, September 11-13, 2009.
