THE MAN WHO WILL COME
(L’UOMO CHE VERRÀ)

Thursday, September 23 @ 6:35pm
Friday, September 24 @ 1:15pm
Friday, September 24 @ 8: 00pm
Sunday, September 26 @ 9:35pm

Director: Giorgio Diritti
Cast: Greta Zuccheri Montanari, Maya Sansa, Alba Rohrwacher, Claudio Casadio, Eleonora Mazzoni, Vito and others
Italy, 2009, 115m

In 1944 Marzabotto, a village in the mountainous area south of Bologna, Italy, the Waffen SS massacred 728 civilians, mostly children, Catholic priests and adults over 60 years of age. Forty five of the people killed were children under two years old. The events surrounding this tragedy are seen through the eyes of a child—Martina (Montanari), a little girl who saves the life of her baby brother. This historical drama richly portrays the lives of the Italian villagers, who, despite the German occupation, adhere to ancient tradition and the rhythms of rural life. In addition to its striking visual beauty, this film’s cultural authenticity extends to the dialogue, which is spoken entirely in the Bolognese dialect. Winner of 3 David di Donatello 2010 Awards including Best Film and the Special Jury Award at the Rome Film Fest.

TERRA MADRE

Saturday, September 25 @ 1:20pm
Sunday, September 26 @11:00am

Director: Ermanno Olmi
Italy, 2009, 78 mins.

Terra Madre is the international gathering, held every two years in Turin, Italy, of world-wide food producers united in the Slow Food movement, founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986. Promoting biodiversity, sustainability and economic fairness, Terra Madre (Mother Earth) uses the analogy of planet earth as a mother of limited resources who will not be able to continue feeding her growing brood unless her needs are understood and fulfilled. The 2006 Terra Madre convention opens this highly inspiring documentary, where 4000 producers of food crops from around the world seek to find solutions for an ailing planet. The projects of key participants filmed over the next two years illustrate how, through the responsible production of food, humans can return to the role of caretaker, not exploiter, of Mother Earth. Eye-opening ideas, lyrical scenes of farmland and the spirit of eating (and living) well coalesce into a poetic call to action.

As her tiny daughter fights for life in an incubator, Maria struggles with her own—trying to find a way to fill the white space with purpose and hope. Margherita Buy powers this drama with a bravura performance which earned her a Pasinetti Award at the Venice Film Festival, where THE WHITE SPACE won a total of five awards.

Italy, 2010, 105 mins.

Four small-time musicians decide to make a 10-day trek by foot out of what would normally take 45 minutes by car across their home region of Basilicata (located at the top of the arch on the boot of Italy) in this engaging comedy. Nicola (Papaleo) is a married, middle-aged teacher who feels as though his life is going nowhere. He decides to invite his friends, who equally need cheering up, to walk with him from the west coast to play a concert at the eastern coast on the final day. Handsome Rocco (Gassman) was the star of a local TV show, but now that he’s relocated to Rome, his career is at a standstill. Franco (Gazzè) doesn’t talk anymore since his fiancée died in a car crash. Salvatore (Briguglia) was so disappointed in love, he dropped out of medical school. The disgruntled four are joined by a grumpy journalist (Mezzogiorno), but along the way, good humor, adventure and the spark of romance take their blues away. Funny, charming and sweetly endearing, this is a road trip you won’t want to miss.

When a young French family arrives with a herd of goats to set up a farm to make chevre cheese, the community is spurred into long-forgotten activity, reviving an old farmhouse for the new family. But soon, the realities of farming begin to cause friction among the neighbors, and conflicts escalate in the once peaceful hills. This gorgeously shot drama is the first to feature the rare Occitan dialect, maintaining a richly textured authenticity throughout. THE WIND BLOWS ROUND won three international film festival awards, was nominated for five David di Donatello awards and was featured in the 2009 Slow Food on Film festival in Bologna.

Italy, 2010, 115 mins.

Beloved comic actor/director Carlo Verdone stars as a priest who returns to Italy after serving as a missionary in Africa in this delightful screwball comedy. Hoping to regain his faith in the loving arms of his family, he instead finds his home in an uproar. His aged father (Fiorentini) is prancing about in a tangerine-colored wig, happily spending the family fortune on Olga, his spunky Moldavian caregiver, now wife. Carlo’s neurotic sister (Bonaiuto) and coke-head brother (Giallini) are outraged that Olga’s daughter Lara (Chiatti) stands to share in their inheritance. But it just might be the free-spirited Lara who will bring everyone together, maybe for the first time.
