TECHNICAL WIZARDRY EXPLORED IN SAINT LOUIS CENTER FOR THE ARTS'
VERSION OF THE MUSICAL "WILLY WONKA"

Honolulu, HI -- February 8, 2011 -- The Saint Louis Center For The Arts will be technically pulling out all the stops when they premiere the musical "Willy Wonka" on March 4th at the Dr. Richard T. Mamiya Theatre on the Saint Louis School campus. Technical wizards Kainoa Jarrett -- Audio Jax, Inc. and Jack Hufstetler -- Theatrix Hawaii have put their masterminds together with director Kyle Kakuno and scenic designer Dewayne Valdez to create an experience of wonder that will thrill adults and children alike.

"Because of the two film versions previously released, there's an expectation from the viewing audience to experience something magical and grand," says Kakuno. "We're trying a few things to make it enjoyable on a technical level ... you might say we're doing Willy Wonka in 4D."

The story, popularized by a film released in 1971 starring Gene Wilder and a recently released version starring Johnny Depp, focuses on a candy entrepreneur named Willy Wonka who decides to give five lucky winners, who find golden tickets in his chocolate bars, a tour of his factory in hopes of finding an heir to his empire.

With such an elaborate story to tell, the production team at Saint Louis is working overtime. "We're putting in just about every trick we know and adding some that we've never tried," says technical director Kainoa Jarrett. "There's revolving sets and people flying and a lot more that we're not even going to talk about."
The set features a motorized turntable installed by Hufstetler and his staff at Theatrix Hawaii. Judy Yoshioka is musical director, Katherine Jones choreographs, Sandy Sandelin is lighting designer, while costumes are designed by Cathy Kakuno.

"The production team we've assembled are all imaginative and great to work with," adds Kakuno. "A lot of people in our industry hear what we're doing and say ‘they can't wait to see it'. Well, the truth is, this is such a crazy endeavor that neither can we."

Willy Wonka opens March 4th and runs Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 2:00 pm through March 20th. Tickets can be purchased through HonoluluBoxOffice.com or by calling 808-550-TIKS (8457). Prices are: $22 Adults; $18 Students, Seniors (60 and over), Military; $15 Children (12 and under).

There is a special gala benefit performance on March 5th. For tickets to that special showing call Lillian Langeslay at 739-4862.
