International Festival showcases cultures of the world

HONOLULU – The Kapiʻolani Community College 23rd Annual International Festival 2011, “HONOR”, will be held March 14–17 from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The four-day event showcases the various cultures of the world and highlights the college’s international education efforts.
 
The festival features guest artists such as Taiko Master Kenny Endo and the Taiko Center of the Pacific; Au’s Shaolin Arts Society, which is one of the top 10 Lion Dance teams in the United States; Alan Akaka, who is known as one of the world’s top steel guitar players; Khanate of the Golden Horde; and the UH Mānoa Tahitian Ensemble.
 
Numerous guest speakers, performances of ethnic dance and music, a Parade of Cultures, art exhibits, films, poetry and literature readings will take place in the ʻOhia Cafeteria and other classrooms around campus. The events include:

  • • Ledward Kaapana: Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar
  • • Flamenco Dance of Spain
  • • Music of the Middle East: Partners in Time featuring special guest Souren Baronian
  • • Honoring Traditions of Africa: Badenyaa
  • • Making the Ukulele: Heritage Instrument
  • • Capoeira Besouro: Afro-Brazilian martial art
  • • Middle Eastern Dance Artists of Hawaii (MEDAH) 
The festival is free and open to the public and is co-sponsored by the Associated Students of Kapi‘olani Community College (ASKCC) Student Congress, Pacific and Asian Affairs Council and Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (SEED).
