In Asia and the Pacific, the crossroads of tradition and contemporary interpretations of traditional culture are clearly manifested in dance. We treasure the traditional forms of dance that are, or were, part of the culture we readily recognize.

However, cultures move on, adapt, and evolve. Creative people borrow from other traditions. They adapt to new ways of communicating and understanding the world. This creates a dynamic in which contemporary choreographers, the creators of dance, bend, and in some cases, abandon the traditional. Using the traditional as a stepping-stone, they often create what becomes perceived as new forms.

In this “Crossroads” event, audiences will enjoy dance from Korea Japan, Okinawa, Fiji, India, the Philippines, and Hawai`i. Featured dancers and choreographers include Peter Rockford Espiritu, Cheryl Nakasone, Yukie Shiroma, Kenny Endo, and Mary Jo Freshley.

This unique pair of concerts will feature both traditional and contemporary versions back-to-back in concerts full of inventive choreography, superb technique, and enchanting movement. Showcasing both the traditional styles and the variations used in contemporary fusion pieces is sure to provide audiences with a memorable, enchanting evening of fabulous dance.

The Asia-Pacific Dance Festival is a co-production of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa and the East-West Center Arts Program.

Funding is provided by the EWC, the UHM Center for Korean Studies, the UHM Diversity and Equity Initiative, the Hawaii Council for the Humanities, the UHM Student Activity Program Fee Board, and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Outreach College.
