The 2011 Mānoa Jazz & Heritage Festival features Grammy award winner Bill Cunliffe with his trio. Cunliffe, jazz pianist and composer, toured with the Buddy Rich Big Band and worked with Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw.

He received a Grammy in 2010 for Best Instrumental Arrangement for "West Side Story Medley" and has been nominated for three additional Grammys and two Emmys as a composer and arranger. In addition to performing and composing he conducts numerous educational workshops and is Associate Professor of Music at Cal State Fullerton.

Joining Cunliffe on the program will be the Dean Taba Quintet featuring Dean Taba on bass, Jason Gay on saxophone, DeShannon Higa on trumpet, Noel Okimoto on percussion and Kyle Matsuda on piano.

Taba has been interested and devoted to music from the early age of six. He later attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and eventually landed in Los Angeles where he has been in demand as a clinician and educator. He has worked with David Benoit, The San Francisco Symphony, Hiroshima, Pauline Wilson and the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

Opening the Festival will be the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Reggie Padilla. Padilla started on the piano and quickly picked up the saxophone. In addition to being the director of the UH Jazz Ensemble he plays with Hawaii based Bop Tribal.

A Performing Arts Presenters of Hawai‘i tour sponsored in part by Baus Engineering, with funding provided by the City and County of Honolulu, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, and the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
