Every year on this Day vegetarians from all over the world conduct a wide variety of outreach activities to help increase awareness of the ethical, environmental, health, and humanitarian benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.

"Our goal is to entice those new to the idea of vegetarianism to give meatless fare a try (even for a day) and to give those who are already vegetarian or moving toward plant-based diets a reason to celebrate their healthy and environmentally friendly food choices," says Mark Fergusson, Down to Earth's Chief Vegetarian Officer (CFO/CEO).

Good for Your Health, Good for the Planet
"The single most important thing an individual can do for their health, for the environment, and for the sake of the innocent animals is to go vegetarian," he adds.

As support, Fergusson points to findings from virtually all the major scientific and medical organizations in the world. “They confirm that a plant-based diet tends to be low in fat and high in fiber, which helps reduce the risk of disease, including our nation's three biggest killers: heart disease, cancer, and strokes. Eating a well rounded, plant-based diet also helps treat and reverse obesity, diabetes and a host of other ailments."

As for protein content, he says a plant-based diet has plenty of protein to meet daily requirements. He says all you need is variety in your meals. The company's website provides information about “Improving your health by moving towards a vegetarain diet”.

“We are proud to be a community resource for those interested in incorporating more vegetarian products into their diet."

23 Million+ Moving Towards Vegetarian Diet
Based on a 2008 study conducted by the Vegetarian Times, the nation's leading publication on vegetarianism, Fergusson estimates that today over seven million people in the U.S. never eat meat, poultry, fish, or seafood and more than 23 million additional people are moving towards a vegetarian diet. He says that number continues to increase as people discover how the switch to a vegetarian diet can help improve their lives and contribute to a cleaner and safer planet.

Fergusson explains that to support a lifetime of good health, Down to Earth carries a wide range of natural and organic foods and groceries including dairy products and local fresh organic produce. They also have bulk foods, which allow customers to purchase the amount they want and save unnecessary packaging and marketing costs on a wide variety of beans, grains and flours, cereals, candies, and more. They have natural and organic body care products and truly green household items and, he says, the most complete range of all-vegetarian and natural, vitamins, supplements, herbs, and homeopathic remedies available in Hawaii.

Down to Earth is known for its signature all-vegetarian deli at all its locations. "They feature a hot table with delicious entrees, an acclaimed salad bar, fresh juices and smoothies, a great made-to-order sandwich menu, fresh grab-and-go options and a wide variety of mouth watering desserts made daily," he adds.

The first Down to Earth store opened its doors to customers in 1977 in Wailuku, Maui. Today, Down to Earth is the largest locally owned natural food store in Hawaii with five locations: Honolulu, Kailua, Pearlridge, and Kapolei on Oahu, and Kahului on Maui.
