Freelance cartoonist Jon J. Murakami will present a fascinating lecture/demonstration on the art of cartooning.



He is best known for his line of "Local Kine" greeting cards, but has also illustrated several children's books including "Geckos Surf," "Going to the Zoo in Hawaii", and "The Original Poi Cats in Hawaii." He also creates comic strips for various local publications. Jon was born and raised on Oahu. He graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Program is suitable for ages 10 and older.

This 45-minute program is sponsored through a grant from the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i, Ko Olina Hawaii, Marriott Resorts Hawaii, HMS Host, Meadow Gold Dairies, Hansen Distribution Group, Armstrong Produce, Roberts Hawaii, DFS Hawaii, and Toshiba Business Solutions.


ABOUT CELEBRATE TEEN READ WEEK!

Audra Furuichi, co-creator of the webcomic "Nemu Nemu," and Jon J. Murakami, creator of the "Gordon Rider" comic book, will be featured artists at selected public libraries in celebration of Teen Read Week 2011 (Oct. 16-22) during the month of October. Teen Read Week is an annual literacy initiative created by the American Library Association for teens, their parents, librarians, and others.




In addition, libraries statewide will host free programs focusing on this year's theme -- "Picture It @ your library" -- which encourages teens to read graphic novels and other illustrated materials, seek out creative books or imagine the world through literature, just for the fun of it.

These programs are suitable for ages 12 and older, and made possible through a grant from the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i, Ko Olina Hawaii, Marriott Resorts Hawaii, HMS Host, Meadow Gold Dairies, Hansen Distribution Group, Armstrong Produce, Roberts Hawaii, DFS Hawaii, and Toshiba Business Solutions.

Program schedules are currently being finalized and will be available October 1st.
