Waikiki Beach Activities at the Hilton Hawaiian Village
We deliver the experience - Waikiki Beach Activities (WBA)" Our name says it all. Since the late 80's WBA has grown to be one of the largest beach services in Waikiki. Our home is in the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa, the largest beach resort in the Pacific and it is truly a village on the beach that is the home of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, the father of International Surfing and the Official Ambassador of Aloha. The Waikiki Community Center (WCC) will celebrate its 28th annual Duke Kahanamoku Challenge at the Duke Kahanamoku Beach and Lagoon in Waikiki. The challenge is a fun, community event for both local residents and visitors that features canoe racing, stand up paddle races (SUP), and ancient Hawaiian makahiki games.

First established in 1985 as a community service project by the Waikiki Jaycees, the event is now positioned as the signature sports fundraising event benefiting the Center. Funds raised from the event will enable the Waikiki Community Center to provide tuition assistance for quality infant care and early education for needy Waikiki working families: canned foods for over 800 families-in-need; social services that support nearly 1,000 senior adults to live independently; and a place for visitors, workers and residents to participate in community affairs, socialize and learn together.

Sponsored by Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort and Hilton Grand Vacations, festivities for the February 24, 2013 event will kick off at 9 a.m. with a double-hulled canoe procession, an oli` and kahiko by Halau Hula `o Hokulani and Kumu Hula Hokulani DeRego and Larry DeRego. The competition starts at 10 a.m. with the final awards presentation at 2 p.m.

The outrigger canoe race is an open ocean, quarter-mile competition open to all skill levels. The race will be a double elimination with winner and consolation brackets. At the same time each team will participate in the stand up paddle race (SUP). The race will take place in Duke's Lagoon one length of the lagoon starting Makai end and the finish at the Mauka end. The traditional Hawaiian makahiki games will feature the `ulu maika (sand bowling), moa pahe`e (sliding), konane (Hawaiian checkers) and haka moa (fighting chicken). The public is invited to come and play the makahiki games and learn the traditional Hawaiian games. Extra attractions are the ama glide (balancing of the boom).

Each year, the challenge honors water sports legends of Hawai‘i. The 2013 honorees comprised of Ralph Goto, Edith Van Geison and Aunty Rosie Lum. These legendary water sports legends perpetuated the legacy of native Hawaiian canoeing and water safety in the community.

The Duke Kahanamoku Challenge also will feature handmade Hawaiian arts and crafts and live Hawaiian entertainment. Ongoing entertainment will start at 9 a.m. with the Royal Hawaiian Band. There is no charge for spectators watching the races, competition or entertainment, which will include some of Hawaii's top musical artists -- Melveen Leed, Manoa Madness, Waipuna, Halau Hula `O Nawahine, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Te Vai Ura Nui, Shining Star the Band and many more!

Waikiki Community Center is a not-for-profit organization 501 (c)(3), operating for the benefit of people who live, work and visit Waikiki. The Center has operated for 35 years, since 1978, and is governed by a volunteer board of directors comprised of civic leaders in our community. Each year 21,000 people participate in 170,000 hours of programs and services directly provided by Center staff, volunteers and contractors. In addition, health, educational and social services are provided on campus by the Center's strategic partners that include the Waikiki Health Center, Coalition for a Drug Free Hawaii, UH Sea Grant College Program and United Self Help.

Other special events sponsored by the center will follow throughout the year, including a signature gala event honoring the Center and the Na Mea Makamae o Waikiki ~ Treasures of Waikiki in September 2014.
