Veranda Entertainment Schedule Jazzes Up Summer

Jazz Mondays, Sunday Scene, and David Swanson at The Kahala

Honolulu, HI… Jazz up your summer nights at The Kahala Hotel & Resort's new remodeled Veranda lounge with a variety of entertainment options from Jazz Mondays, to the Sunday Scene, to popular piano man David Swanson Tuesday through Saturdays. The Veranda is offering music options nightly through the long, warm summer nights. Enjoy summer's twilight and ocean views in the stunning new Veranda lounge.

Monday is now jazz night at The Veranda lounge. The Kahala Hotel & Resort recently introduced Jazz Mondays at The Veranda, in June. The music starts at 7:30 p.m. and plays through 10 p.m. Jazz Mondays will feature a variety of local musicians each week. There is no cover fee and parking is validated for up to 3 hours with a $25 purchase. Enjoy cocktails and small plates from The Veranda's recently updated new menu.

Jazz Mondays at The Kahala performing schedule includes ‘3 After 5' on June 24, with Mike Grande on piano, Wendell Au on guitar, and Adj Larioza on percussion. Guitar man Robert Shinoda with DeShannon Higa on trumpet and Bonny B (former drummer of the legendary jazz fusion group Spyro Gyra) perform on July 1, from 7:30 until 10 p.m. There is no cover charge.

DeShannon Higa is a renowned jazz trumpet player both in Hawaii and New York City. His professional experience spans over 20 years and has performed in Japan, China, Okinawa, Mexico, and Europe. Among his teachers are studio legend Ollie Mitchell, Grammy Award winning jazz trumpet player Brian Lynch, and Harry Connick Jr.'s lead player Roger Ingram. He has also recorded on many albums including Raiatea Helm, Hula Joe & the Hutjumpers who received a Hoku Award for best jazz album, and Fiji.De Shannon's musical style encompasses jazz to Latin salsa to modern electronica and hip hop.He was also the founding member of the jazz group Bop Tribal who released their debut album in 2008 to rave reviews, including the Hawaii Music Award for Best Jazz Album. Robert Shinoda has worked professionally in Hawaii and the mainland United States as a guitarist, arranger, producer, film composer, and musical director since 1971. His performing credits include The Honolulu Symphony's Masterworks and Pops series, musical theatre, and the Hawaii International Jazz Festival, among many others. He is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and has completed graduate studies in music composition at The University of Hawaii at Manoa.

The Sunday Scene at The Kahala begins June 30 offers a mix of fusion, blues, Latin-influenced and contemporary Hawaiian artists. First up on June 30 will be Joshua Kaye on piano, Bonny B on drums, and Dean Taba on bass. Taba has performed with Jake Shimabukuro and The Honolulu Symphony. The Sunday Scene changes weekly and there is no cover charge. Bring a date and enjoy live entertainment paired with great food and beverages.

On Sunday, July 7, enjoy listening to this hip quartet featuring Robert Shinoda on guitar; Dean Taba on bass; DeShannon Higa on trumpet; and Bonny B on drums. And should the urge come, take your date for a spin on the dance floor, too. Tuesday through Saturday from 7:30 until 11 p.m., enjoy solo piano man David Swanson on the keyboard. His vibe is totally contemporary with a strong jazz influence on his arrangements of current pop standards and classic songs of yesterday. And he sings like an angel--you'll adore his versions of "The Way You Look Tonight, "Girl Talk" and "As Time Goes By." He's been performing at The Kahala for more than four years and recorded several CDs of music which are always available for purchase when you realize you can't live without his smooth sound. Swanson turns a song inside out then arranges, colors, enhances and interprets it for a whole new take on a classic like "Route 66" or "Days of Wine and Roses." His versions are fresh and soothing while still maintaining the integrity of the original sound.

The Veranda was renovated this spring and now features comfy new Tommy Bahama living-room style furniture, floors great for dancing, and both indoor and outdoor al fresco sitting areas. The outdoor lanai overlooks the ocean, the pool, and the dolphin lagoon where six Atlantic Bottlenose dolphins live and play.

The new Veranda menu is globally-inspired with the chef's gourmet makeover on traditional street food from around the world. Small plates and appetizers, salads, main entrees and desserts bring the art of grazing to all new heights. The Veranda's Mixologists are also serving a new menu of creative cocktails.

Reservations aren't necessary, but if you are bringing a large group of friends, they are recommended. Call (808) 739-8760 or e-mail restaurants@kahalaresort.com. The Veranda is Kahala's best address for tea or cocktails any day of the week.
