Ohana Arts Summer Festival and School presents "Footloose," the musical based on the 1983 film "Footloose," written by Hawaii's own Dean Pitchford. Performances will take place at Mamiya Theater on the campus of Chaminade University (3142 Waialae Avenue Honolulu, HI 96816), and will run from Thursday July 25th-Saturday July 27th for a total of four performances. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evening performances will commence at 7:30 PM, and the Saturday matinee performance will take place at 2:00 PM. Performers will include 57 students island-wide between the ages of 8-18.

Join us for a nostalgic time travel back into the 80's for a universal story about fighting for justice and freedom of expression. Audience members will leave humming familiar songs, including "Almost Paradise," "Holding out for a Hero," "Let's Here it For the Boys," and of course the show's title song. This summer, the Ohana Arts students will be performing the show in two different casts. The "blue" cast features elementary and middle school students in leading roles, and the "red" cast features high school students in leading roles. "We are very fortunate to have so many hard working, capable, and talented students in Ohana Arts. We believe having two casts grouped by age will provide more opportunities for our students to grow and shine," says Jennifer Taira, Executive & Artistic Director of Ohana Arts.

Ohana Arts, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in January 2010 by Jennifer Taira, pianist and clarinetist, Carolyn Taira, director of the Hongwanji Mission School Performing Theater, and Laurie Rubin, opera singer and recitalist who concertizes internationally. Having received degrees in their respective fields on the mainland, Jennifer, Carolyn, and Laurie realized the need for more exposure to the arts in Hawaii which would help foster and nurture the local talent, while building upon Hawaii's already rich culture. Their summer program was launched in 2010 with a musical theater workshop, culminating in a fully staged musical production comprised of 23 students islandwide, ages 8-18. Ohana Arts has expanded to offer two additional programs, including morning acting, dance, and voice intensives, as well as a composer-performer workshop for advanced middle and high school musicians. Over 65 students are participating in Ohana Arts programs this summer. Jennifer, Carolyn, and Laurie are joined by choreographer Liz Piccoli, who has danced with the Metropolitan Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera, acting teacher Jill Bolstridge who has directed over 50 youth theater productions in New York and beyond, and composition teachers Gordon Beeferman whose works have been performed by New York City Opera and Eighth Blackbird and Matt Love who has played with the Hawaii Symphony, and whose debut album of electronic music is soon to be released. Ohana Arts aims to inspire and engage people through high caliber educational and professional arts programs, and to cultivate an international family (Ohana) in the Pacific by promoting world friendship and peace through the universal language of the arts.
