TROPICABANA! A Musical Romp through the Tropics

Pop jazz vocalist Dana Land debuts newly created show in HPR's Atherton on January 25

Mambo, Cha Cha, Calypso and Samba are just a few of the styles Dana Land and her band perform on a journey of musical favorites from Jobim to Sinatra in "Tropicabana! A Musical Romp Through the Tropics." The newly created show featuring pop jazz vocalist Dana Land makes its debut in HPR's Atherton Studio Saturday January 25. Land promises an evening of music inspired by the tropics, comedy, and fun surprises too. Her sidemen will include: Tommy James, piano; Von Baron, drums, percussion; John Kolivas, contra bass; Tim Tsukiyama, woodwinds; and Steve Martinucci, guitarist. Reservations may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during business hours. Tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaii Public Radio, 738 Kaheka Street.

Pop jazz vocalist, recording artist, music producer/educator/camp director, Dana Land has been stirring up the jazz scene with her refreshing style. A fifth generation Hawaii girl, Dana is happy to be residing back in the Islands after many years in the San Francisco Bay Area working in interior design/project management and raising a family. Voice lessons at Sonoma State University uncovered her passion for music. Since then she has performed at numerous jazz festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, for corporate events and private functions and had a 3-year performance home at one of the Bay Area's best jazz venues, The Lodge at Sonoma.

Tommy James is a pianist, composer and arranger based in Honolulu. James attended the Manhattan School of Music and is currently the conductor/music director for the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Known for his style versatility, James has performed or recorded with a variety of jazz and pop artists including Stanley Turrentine, Roy Ayres, Frank Foster, Roberta Flack, Cleo Laine and Maureen McGovern.

Von Baron studied drums, percussion and music at the University of Missouri and then at Berklee College of Music. In addition to teaching drumming and performing professionally, he has recorded three albums of original music.

Tim Tsukiyama (woodwinds) also attended Berklee College of Music and graduated from Lawrence University in Wisconsin. He has performed with Benny Golson, Conrad Herwig, Honolulu Symphony and Symphony Pops, the Honolulu Jazz Quartet and the Royal Hawaiian Band.

Bassist John Kolivas has been playing professionally for over 35 years, performing with slack key legend Keola Beamer, the Honolulu Jazz Quartet, and jazz luminaries including Delfeayo Marsalis, Don Grusin and George Benson, and with the Hawaii Symphony.

Guitarist Steve Martinucci was originally trained in jazz and classical music. He's recently added Brazilian Bossa Nova and Samba music to his diverse repertoire.
