Kuana Torres Kahele's HPR Concert Features New Work from Music for the Hawaiian Islands

Original hula compositions pay tribute to islands of Hawai‘i and Ni‘ihau

On Saturday, July 5, in HPR's 75-seat Atherton Studio, Kuana Torres Kahele gives a rare up-close-and-personal concert of his recently released CD Hawaiʻi Keawe, the first volume of his Music for the Hawaiian Islands series. Each album in the anticipated six-part series pays tribute to an individual island with original music from the multi-award-winning composer/vocalist, written specifically for hula. For his July 5th return to the Atherton, Kahele also gives a sneak peek into the next installment in the series, focused on the island of Niʻihau. Reservations may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $35 general, $30 for HPR members, and $20 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaii Public Radio, 738 Kaheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

On its completion (projected for 2016), Music for the Hawaiian Islands, with its nearly 100 new songs for hula, will be arguably the most extensive and thorough musical tribute to our islands. In Hawaiʻi Keawe, Kahele's poetic lyrics illustrate the beauty of his birthplace, Moku O Keawe (Hawaiian for the island of Hawaiʻi), while documenting everything from important place names to island winds and specific rains.

Kahele's connection to the island of Niʻihau, the subject of the second volume, began in 2012 when he was asked to teach hula to a small group of Ni‘ihau women, based on mele he had written for the island. Since then, his monthly visits have resulted in an official organized Niʻihau halau, "Na Lei Lanakila O Niʻihau." Kahele is also known for his efforts to perpetuate the art of the Niʻihau shell lei (Lei Pupu) and often takes lei for sale on his many trips, returning 100% of the earnings to the lei maker. His passion and support have benefitted countless families in need of assistance.

Kahele performs and teaches cultural workshops all over the world. In Japan, he currently maintains the Hawaiian Music & Culture School in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. He offers his more than 200 students courses in voice, haku mele, mele hula, fresh lei making, ʻukulele, and guitar.

About HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio

The Atherton Studio seats 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The Studio is available for rent for musical performances, community group meetings, and lectures. It is located in the HPR office and studio complex at 738 Kaheka Street, across from the Honolulu Don Quijote. Metered street parking is available, as are paid lots at the First Hawaiian Bank (Kapi‘olani branch) and in the Pan Am building.
