HPR-2 Host Sandy Tsukiyama and Friends Salute Women Songwriters in Atherton Concert August 23

Local song stylist and host of Hawai‘i Public Radio's Brazilian Experience, Sandy Tsukiyama is joined by vocalists Riya Davis, Rachel Gonzales, and Alison Maldonado in "A Tribute to Lady Songwriters." The performers have selected works of personal significance covering Joni Mitchell, Aretha Franklin, Laura Nyro, Carly Simon, Ida Cox, and Cindy Lauper, and others. This showcase of women artists is scheduled for Saturday, August 23rd, at 7:30 p.m. in the Atherton Studio. Backing up the singers are guitarist Dave Yamasaki, pianist Jeanette Trevias, bassist Mark Tanouye, and drummer Peter Factora.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Prices are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with IDs. The Atherton Studio is located at the Hawai‘i Public Radio Plaza, 738 Kaheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; the music starts at 7:30 p.m.

Tsukiyama grew up studying classical piano and listening to Dixieland jazz and Calypso in a musically oriented family. After receiving a BA in Ethnomusicology from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, she spent three years in Brazil at Escola de Música da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro Centro Para Pesquisas Folclóricas (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro School of Music Center for Folkloric Research), where she studied folk music traditions on a Rotary Post-Graduate Fellowship for International Understanding.

Her first singing jobs after college were as a backup singer for Hawai‘i artists such as Nohelani Cypriano and Ohta-San. She also sang lead vocals in various salsa, Latin jazz, and big bands, as well as performed in several local musical productions including Jim Nabors' A Merry Christmas With Friends and Nabors.

Currently, Tsukiyama leads her own Brazilian jazz band, Mistura; is one-third of the female trio, SER, which performs at Duc's Bistro in Chinatown; and occasionally sings background for her Roosevelt High School classmate Yvonne Elliman. She is learning choral directing through an internship with the Hawai‘i Youth Opera Chorus.

Tsukiyama has taught music at the preschool and middle school levels and Brazilian Portuguese language adult education classes. She is a Special Education teacher in the Community-Based Instruction program at Roosevelt High School and freelances as an English, Portuguese, and Spanish interpreter/translator.
