Ardente Duo Return to Atherton August 31
Program features Franck's Sonata for Violin and Piano
On Sunday, August 31, at 4:00 p.m., the Ardente Duo (violinist Darel Stark and pianist Sachi P. Hirakouji) fill the Atherton Performing Arts Studio with arguably one of the finest works for violin and piano ever written, César Franck's soaring Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major. The program also includes works by Beethoven, Edward Elgar, and Eugène Ysaÿe. The concert also gives audiences a rare opportunity to enjoy the Atherton's magnificent Bösendorfer grand piano. Reservations may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets for the Ardente Duo's afternoon of chamber music are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawai‘i Public Radio Plaza, 738 Kaheka Street.
Other pieces on the program include Beethoven's Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Minor No.4, Op. 23, and Elgar's La Capricieuse, Op. 17. In a clever piece of programming, the first half of the evening ends with violin virtuoso Ysaÿe's Sonata No.2 for Solo Violin; the featured work by Franck, which concludes the concert, was actually composed as a wedding present for and first performed by Ysaÿe at his matrimonial celebration.
Violinist Darel Stark is also a violist, composer, conductor and educator. Since his debut at age seven, he has performed on three continents including concerts at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Weill Recital Hall. He is concertmaster of the Bach Chamber Orchestra, teaches violin and orchestra at the Honolulu Waldorf School, and chamber music at ‘Iolani School. With the Honolulu Symphony for sixteen years, he is associate principal violin of the new Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra. Born in New York City, he graduated from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University and studied violin with Nicole DiCecco, Lazar Gosman, and Berl Senofsky. His many accolades include prizes at international competitions in Italy and Switzerland, a TIME Magazine College Achievement Award, two Friedberg Prizes in chamber music from Peabody, and prizes in over a dozen local and national competitions. He has recorded for Beauport Classical, Musica Baudino, CBS Masterworks, and SONY Classical.
Stark has won praise by critics in the U.S. and Europe: "rock-solid technique...commands extraordinary virtuosity...technical mastery and a persuasive sensitivity to detail...flawless, beautiful and passionate...thorough understanding of the music's style." From local papers after soloing with the Honolulu Symphony, "William Schuman's violin concerto displayed Stark's impressive technique. He ripped through multiple stops and sailed through lyric passages. His rhythmic precision and accuracy of intonation carried the day." Stark enjoys performing with his wife, Georgine, and his children, Sophia and Raphael. His website (www.darelstark.com) lists upcoming performances and information about his CD release due later this year.
