Stories, Poems, and Music by Hawai‘i's Writers Close Atherton Summer Season

Aloha Shorts producers and host Jon Osorio address contemporary themes in From Me to You

Hawai‘i Public Radio's 2014 Atherton summer season closes on Saturday, September 13, with From Me to You, an evening of spoken word and song from the producers of the popular radio program Aloha Shorts. Listeners continued to ask for the weekly program of literature by Hawai‘i's writers read by local actors after its final broadcast at the end of 2012. The station has responded by inviting the show's former producing team to create an Atherton event in a similar format. In turn, co-producers Sammie Choy, Craig Howes, and Phyllis S.K. Look enlisted renowned Hawaiian scholar, educator, musician, and composer Jonathan K. Osorio to host and provide musical direction and accompaniment. Reservations for From Me to You (formerly known by its working title Sincerely, Hawai‘i) may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Prices are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with IDs. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawai‘i Public Radio, 738 Kaheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; the music and readings begin at 7:30 p.m.

The program features stories and poems distinctive for their use of direct address. In the first- and second-person, the evening's familiar themes of "Small Kid Time," "Heritage and Generations," "The Male Animal," "The State of the City/State," and "Modern Romance" become more intimate, personal, and immediate. The songs selected, such as Olomana's "Ku‘u Home O Kahalu‘u" and the Beamers' "Honolulu City Lights," are also addressed "from me to you."

The readings will include Darrell H.Y. Lum's "Precious" and "Eh, Honolulu," the latter originally written for and broadcast on the award-winning public radio program State of the Re:Union (not carried on HPR), plus works from Folks You Meet in Longs and Other Stories by perennial favorite Lee Cataluna. Some of the other writers represented are Mavis Hara, Norman Hindley, Lisa Linn Kanae, Juliet S. Kono, Wing Tek Lum, Cathy Song, and Amy Uyematsu. Many of the pieces were previously published by Bamboo Ridge Press.

The host and musical director for From Me to You is Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwo‘ole Osorio. He is a scholar of nineteenth century political and social history in Hawai‘i and has written a book, Dismembering Lahui, which details the colonization of Hawai‘i. He has been a constant activist and advocate for Hawaiian self-determination. He is a full professor on the faculty at the Kamakakuokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa. Osorio is also a composer and singer with a history as a Hawaiian music recording artist since 1975.

The cast of seven actors is well-known to Aloha Shorts and local theatre audiences: Daryl Bonilla, Stephanie Keiko Kong, Devon Nekoba, Annie Renick, Kiana Rivera, Aito Simpson Steele, and Jamie Simpson Steele.
