Guitarist Shoji Ledward Leads JazzSpeak at the Atherton Jan. 24

Improvisational musical conversations between Ledward, Alika Lyman, and Duane Padilla

Hōkū Award-nominee guitarist Shoji Ledward invites bassist Alika Lyman and violinist Duane Padilla to join him at Hawaiʻi Public Radio's Atherton Studio in an evening they call JazzSpeak. The trio, said to have some of the "biggest ears" in Hawaiʻi's music business, have been listening closely to each other and having great musical conversations. Now, the public will be able to eavesdrop on their improvisational discourses in a live performance in HPR's intimate recital hall on Saturday, January 24, 2015. The conversation starters will be songs penned by Ledward inspired by events in his life and featured in his upcoming CD Saudade.

Tickets for this evening of JazzSpeak at the Atherton are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Reservations may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About the artists

Guitarist Shoji Ledward is known for his idiosyncratic, singular style: he plucks with his right hand while the fingers on his left hand press and pull the strings, creating a complex, three-part, rhythmic counterpoint melody line, accompaniment, and bass.

A lifelong musician, Ledward began playing guitar at age seven. Since then, he has played with some of the biggest names in Hawai‘i's music scene, including Don Ho, Melveen Leed, Kapono Beamer, and Marlene Sai. He has also performed with the Smothers Brothers and Bobby Vinton. His solo jazz album Live at the Contemporary Café was nominated for a Nā Hōkū Hanohano award in 2008. He studied with Oliver Stone, Howard Roberts, and Jerry Byrd, and completed his undergraduate studies at Kapiʻolani Community College, Leeward Community College, and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He has taught guitar at Punahou School since 2007.

Alika Lyman is a Hawaiʻi native and musician of 13 years. His first venture was playing Beatles songs on guitar and tenor sax in middle school band. In high school, Lyman played lead guitar in local rock/metal acts around Oʻahu before developing an appreciation for jazz in 2007. In 2009, Lyman relocated to Seattle to pursue jazz and private teaching. He led the Alika Lyman Group that played regularly in the Seattle area and held a steady gig at Lucid Jazz Lounge, Triple Door, and Sullivans Steakhouse. While in Seattle, he worked at Ev Stern's Jazz Workshop in the Fremont neighborhood where he taught jazz improvisation to students of all ages, levels, and instruments. Lyman developed a love for upright bass in Seattle and studied under Ev Stern and Evan Flory Barnes. He is currently studying classical bass with Randy Wong of the Hawaiʻi Symphony Orchestra.

Violinist Duane Padilla began musical studies at the age of 4 with Suzuki violin teacher Idell Low. After continuing his training with Gerardo Ribeiro at Northwestern University and Syoko Aki at Yale University, he began his career as an orchestral musician, performing with the National Repertoire Orchestra, the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the New Haven Symphony, and the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra. Padilla's more recent artistic endeavors have turned towards jazz. As a founding member of The Hot Club of Hulaville, he won the Hawaiʻi Academy of Recording Arts' award for jazz album of the year for their gypsy jazz release Django Would Go! An equally accomplished educator, Duane began his teaching career in Connecticut, where he was head of the Suzuki Program at the Tabor Community Arts Center and the Bethwood Suzuki School. He is currently on the faculty of the Punahou Music School and serving as Vice Chairman on the National American String Teachers Association's Eclectic Styles Committee.
