Rousing Evening of Bluegrass and Americana Music with Saloon Pilots in Atherton, August 15

Hawaiʻi's Saloon Pilots livens up HPR's Atherton Studio on Saturday, August 15 with a diverse program tracing the evolution of traditional American folk music into bluegrass, including the debut of several of their own original songs. They'll demonstrate how songs that began in our country's early Appalachian musical culture absorbed influences from blues, jazz, and rock to become the contemporary Americana music we know today.

This progressive bluegrass band is comprised of Lesley Kline (fiddle and vocals), Kilin Reese (guitar and lead vocals), Paul Sato (five-string banjo and vocals), Mark Ransom (electric bass and vocals), and Russell Lundgren (percussion).

Reservations for the Saloon Pilots' "An Evening of Bluegrass and Americana Music" may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About the artists

Lesley Kline is originally from Oklahoma and spent a decade in Paris playing professionally in bluegrass and mariachi bands before settling in Hawaiʻi. She is adept at playing in a number of styles, including Irish and early American fiddle tunes, as well as bluegrass.

Kilin Reece's innovative guitar solos are only eclipsed by his singing style which encompasses a contemporary approach and sound applied to traditional material. His broad palette of musical influences bring a blend to the band that extends beyond genres.

Paul Sato was born and raised in Honolulu. His eclectic banjo-playing style tends to reflect his exposure and openness to the many forms of music present in Hawaiʻi.

Mark Ransom's electric bass is an unusual feature for a bluegrass band, but his approach on the instrument provides the Saloon Pilots' music with a unique vibrance. He is also the band's specialist for Chuck Berry songs.

Russell Lundgren is a talented jazz drummer who plays a box with the Saloon Pilots -- not a cajon, not a conga, an actual cardboard box. The range of tones that he is able to produce with his cardboard box are especially apparent when he does a percussion solo.
