Make-a-Difference Month clean-ups kick off this weekend

The Department of Facility Maintenance Storm Water Quality Branch will sponsor clean-ups in Pālolo on Saturday, October 7, starting at 10 a.m., and on Sunday, October 8, starting at 9 a.m.

The clean-ups mark the start of the city's annual Make-a-Difference Month observance. Mayor Kirk Caldwell has proclaimed October 2017 to be Make-a-Difference Month and the Department of Facility Maintenance will present a series of community volunteer events showcasing its Adopt-A-Block and Adopt-A-Stream programs across the island throughout October.

NK Management is coordinating the Pālolo Adopt-A-Stream clean-up on Saturday, October 7. Volunteers will meet at the bridge near Kehau Place for a clean-up along Pālolo Stream. For more information, please call 768-4319.

Trees to Seas will be organizing Sunday's clean-up. Participants will meet at the Kalua Road drainage channel access ramp to collect debris along Pālolo Stream, learn how such debris makes it into our marine environment, and how water quality testing is conducted. For more information, please call 469-6106.

All volunteers must be 12 years of age or older and are required to sign a release form to participate in the clean-ups. Minors must have their parent or guardian sign the release form, which is available at www.cleanwaterhonolulu.com. Participants should anticipate getting dirty, wear covered shoes, use sun protection, and bring drinking water.

Make-A-Difference Day on Saturday, October 28, is the largest national day of community service. Events during Make-A-Difference Month create awareness of non-point source pollution, water quality issues, and helps foster partnerships between residents and local government.
