Jonathan Karrant Croons in HPR's Atherton Studio, October 28

Jonathan Karrant, named one of the top 12 rising jazz vocalists in New York by the NYC Jazz Record, brings his suave song stylings to HPR's Atherton Studio on October 28. He'll be performing classic selections from the American Songbook and bringing his own jazzy twist to contemporary songs.

Reservations for Jonathan Karrant may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

Audiences have characterized Karrant as a great interpreter of song, a storyteller, a singer who brings music and lyric alive, an entertainer of star quality. Others say he paints a picture, he presents a mood and captivates a room through song. Jazz Corner said "Karrant's voice is romantic without being cloying, warm but not forced" and "that he sings standards with an emotional weight that make it seem as if he had written the songs himself."

About the artist

Jonathan Karrant was born in the heart of America, at the foothills of the Ozarks in the old western town of Fort Smith, Arkansas. He studied performance in New York City at the William Esper Studio, and music with Seth Riggs in Los Angeles. He later studied privately under the direction of Marilyn Maye and Kurt Eling. Karrant also gives credit to real performance experience in recalling that a lot of what he has learned about singing a song has just come with time, singing to audiences night after night.

His first recording was a ten-song album entitled "Introducing Jonathan Karrant," recorded with Vincent Falcone, Sinatra's musical director/pianist.

Karrant's more recent album "On and On" hit number four in the Billboard jazz charts. He was honored in the 2014 New York City Jazz Cabaret Honors and, in 2015, he was voted "Best Singer" for the Bravo San Diego Awards. He has performed across the country, as well as in Europe. Karrant sits on the board of the Las Vegas Jazz Society and teaches a jazz class at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
