Piano Jazz Master Rich Crandall opens Atherton Winter Season, October 21

Hawaiʻi Public Radio's 2017-18 Atherton Studio Winter Season opens on October 21 with a concert by esteemed jazz pianist Rich Crandall. The evening is the first of four to feature Hawaiʻi's jazz piano masters in solo performance on the Atherton's magnificent Bösendorfer grand. Crandall will be performing from his recently released solo album of standards Buddy Nowhere 1930, as well as his original compositions inspired by his 40 years of life in the islands.

Following Crandall in the Hawaiʻi Piano Jazz Masters series are Tommy James (December 9), Joshua Kaye (February 3, 2018), and Ethan Capone (March 10, 2018). The entire Atherton Season is listed at www.hprtickets.org.

Reservations for Rich Crandall or the entire Hawaiʻi Piano Jazz Masters series may also be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About the artist

Rich Crandall's musical journey was influenced by his father's love for traditional and big band jazz. Before arriving in Hawaiʻi 40 years ago, Crandall led his own groups in Wisconsin, Chicago, Michigan, and San Francisco. He performed with jazz greats Freddie Hubbard, Sadao Watanabe, Frank Morgan, Ernestine Anderson, Trummy Young, Henry Mancini, Ira Sullivan, Rufus Reid, and others. It was during his time in the islands, however, that he found his unique musical voice. Many of his original compositions are available on his recordings Solo Travel, Soothsayer, ‘Til Further Notice, and Last Takes With Rory. His Shine and Malaika CDs both feature his daughter Angela. Crandall is known for his local community efforts, including his statewide "Jazz-In-The-Schools" program and a decade of Tuesday night Studio 6 jazz sessions at the Musicians' Association of Hawaii.
