Kamakakēhau Fernandez Strikes High Notes in Atherton Studio, March 3

Hawaiian falsetto singer Ryan Kamakakēhau Fernandez debuts in HPR's Atherton Studio on March 3rd. Adopted as an infant by a Maui family, this African American artist developed an appreciation for Hawaiian culture and music through his years in a Hawaiian language immersion program. He is the winner of the 2003 Richard Hoʻopiʻi Falsetto Contest (part of the Aloha Festival), as well as a 2013 Nā Hōkū Hanahano Award for his solo CD Wahi Mahalo.

Reservations for "Kamaka" Fernandez may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID; service charges are applied to online orders. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About the artist

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Kamakakēhau Fernandez was six weeks old when he was adopted by Robyn Naeʻole and brought to Maui. He is a graduate of the Hawaiian Language Immersion Program (Kula Kaiapuni, King Kekaulike High School) and is fluent in Hawaiian. His family and home, as well as his education shaped him into one of Hawaiʻi's newest and most refreshing talents.

As he studied -- and lived -- Hawaiian culture and language, he found an affinity for ʻukulele and the art of leo kiʻekiʻe (falsetto) singing. He was the 2003 winner of falsetto legend Richard Hoʻopiʻiʻs falsetto contest, (part of the annual Aloha Festival celebration) and from that point on, Fernandez continued to astonish audiences with the range of his voice, his skill on the ʻukulele, and his spirit. As Kamaka states, "I love my mom, my ‘ohana, my friends, and this wonderful culture that I was lucky enough to be immersed in. Hawaiʻi is my heart and soul."

He has performed on numerous prestigious local stages, including the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua's Celebration of the Arts, the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, Oʻahu's Keiki Hula Festival, the Tahiti Fete, and the Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi, as well as on stages in the continental United States and Japan.

Fernandez is one of the featured performers on the 2004 Aloha Festivals Falsetto Contest Winners -- Vol. 5 CD. In 2012, he won the 4th Annual Kani Ka Pila Grille Talent Search. For his debut solo album Wahi Mahalo, he worked with multiple Hōkū award-winning producer Dave Tucciarone and won the 2013 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Extended Play.
