AMERICAN SAVINGS BANK AWARDS $10,000 GRANT
TO CHAMINADE UNIVERSITY FOR LAPTOPS

HONOLULU--July 20, 2007--American Savings Bank recently awarded Chaminade University a $10,000 grant through the Hawaiian Electric Industries (HEI) Charitable Foundation to help fund its Sullivan Family Library laptop computer loan program. "American Savings Bank has made education a top priority," said Rian DuBach, American Savings Bank's Community Development/CRA Manager. "We are very pleased to continue our relationship with Chaminade University because of its commitment to improving the lives of so many here in our islands."

The grant will be used to help purchase 12 laptop computers for Chaminade University's Sullivan Family Library. The library is currently under construction and is scheduled for dedication in April 2008. The new 30,000 square foot library will be equipped with wireless access points and a wireless network. This will allow users more mobility and flexibility-- an important component in the University's plan to increase access to technology campus-wide. Chaminade plans to incorporate the laptops in a loan program for its students, which allows them to borrow computers for research and writing projects for in-library use.

"We are very grateful to American Savings Bank and the HEI Charitable Foundation for their support," said Dr. Larry Osborne, dean of information services and library. "Wireless laptops will allow student access to the Internet without having to wait for a wired computer to become available, and laptop loans will increase the amount of electronic access available to students."

The HEI Charitable Foundation is funded by the shareholders of Hawaiian Electric Industries and was organized in 1984 under 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The primary purpose of the foundation is to award grants to 501 (c) (3) organizations in the State of Hawaii in the categories of Education, Family Services, Environment, and Community Development.

Celebrating more than 50 years of educating students for life, service and successful careers, Chaminade University offers programs of study grounded in the liberal arts with day, evening, online and accelerated courses. The main campus is located in Kaimuki at 3140 Waialae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816, with 10 satellite locations around Oahu military bases and Catholic parishes and schools.
