CHAMINADE TO RECEIVE $2 MILLION GRANT

-- --TITLE III GRANT TARGETS NATIVE HAWAIIAN STUDENTS IN COMMUNICATIONS---

HONOLULU July 16, 2009-The U.S. Department of Education announced that it will award Chaminade University a $2 million Title III, Alaska Native-Serving and Native Hawaiian-Serving (ANNH) grant covering the period of Oct. 1, 2009 through Sept. 30, 2010. Grant funding will help:

(1) Improve the infrastructure of Eiben Hall where Chaminade's communications program is located,
(2) Prepare the facilities that will house the teaching, production and support facilities for Chaminade's communications program,
(3) And update the information technology capabilities to support student and faculty coursework and production work in the academic communications program.

"The grant will directly benefit our students as it will allow us to develop our communications-marketing program significantly," said Chaminade University's President Bro. Bernard Ploeger, S.M., PhD. "It also enables us to renovate and update Eiben Hall, the 80-year old building that houses the Fine Arts, Interior Design and Communications-Marketing programs."

Since 2000, Chaminade has increasingly distinguished itself for its success in supporting the achievements of students of Native Hawaiian, Pacific Island and other underrepresented students. Native Hawaiian students comprise approximately 13 percent of its undergraduate fall 2008 enrollment. Currently, 21% of the university's communications majors are of Native Hawaiian descent. Moreover, students from Chaminade's communications program have gained recognition for their talents in their majors, including three students honored as "Most Promising Minority Student in Advertising" by the American Advertising Federation out of 40 students nationally.

Celebrating more than 50 years of educating students for life, service and successful careers, a Catholic Marianist university, Chaminade University is a Native Hawaiian / Pacific Islander serving institution offering programs of study grounded in the liberal arts with day, evening, online and accelerated courses. The main campus is located in Ka'imuki at 3140 Waialae Ave., Honolulu, HI 96816, with 10 satellite locations around Oahu.
