"NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society" by Michael Buckley has been chosen by the children of Hawaii as the winner of the 2011 Nene Award. The Nene Honor Book Award (runner-up) is "The Lemonade War" by Jacqueline Davies.

Margaret Peterson Haddix, a multiple award-winning author of children's and teen books including 2010 Nene Award winner "Found," book one of "The Missing" series, was a special guest and made the announcement this morning before a large audience of invited dignitaries, students, teachers, and other guests at the 46th Annual Nene Award Presentation Ceremony, conducted this year at the Consolidated Theatres' Ward Stadium 16. In addition to "Found," Haddix has written more than 25 books for children and teens, including "Running Out of Time," "Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey," "Just Ella," The Girl with 500 Middle Names," and the "Shadow Children" series. Her books have been honored with "New York Times" bestseller status.

The annual Nene Award is presented to the favorite fiction book based on a vote by the children of Hawaii in grades 4 through 6. This year, a total of 5,329 students voted statewide cast their ballots at public libraries, private and public school.

"NERDS" is a humorous story about a group of unpopular fifth graders who run a spy network from inside their school. With the help of cutting-edge science, they transform their nerdy qualities into incredible abilities to battle an array of James Bond-style villains, each with an evil plan more diabolical and more ridiculous than the last. "NERDS" is followed by a sequel: "M is for Mama's Boy." Michael Buckley is also the author of the popular "Sisters Grimm" series.

Haddix also appeared at two "Meet the Author" events on March 17 at Sacred Hearts Academy School Auditorium for invited private school students, and at Kapolei Public Library for the general public. The ceremony also featured presentations by winners of the student contests celebrating "Found" in persuasive and interpretive essays and posters.
