ABOUT BARBARA MARUMOTO
REPRESENTATIVE 19TH DISTRICT
Barbara Marumoto has represented the Kaimuki, Kahala, Waialae area in the Hawaii House of Representatives since 1978. Before beginning her legislative service, Barbara was elected to the 1978 Hawaii Constitutional Convention. She was born in San Francisco and was interned during WWII. She is married to retired CPA Richard A. Coons, former partner-in-charge-Honolulu and together they have six children and six grandchildren.

As a delegate to the "con con" and as a Minority member of the House she is credited with:
  • changing the formerly partisan Board of Education to non-partisan;
  • assigning legislative reapportionment to a Reapportionment Commission;
  • reestablishing staggered terms for the state Senate in 1978;
  • introducing the 1st proposal to secure a General Fund expenditure ceiling;
  • instituting a $25 tax credit for the purchase of child passenger restraint systems; " Keiki carseats"
  • obtaining appropriations to expand a tree-planting program and to keep brown tree snakes out of Hawaii;
  • leading the effort to prohibit children under 13 from riding in pickup truck beds; and
  • promoting the law to increase child car seat usage allowing a judge to decide whether HIV testing of suspect is warranted in sex offense cases.
  • introducing the first bill calling for DNA testing of all convicted felons

Barbara Marumoto focuses her legislative efforts on pocket-book issues, such as taxation, business climate improvement, worker's compensation reform, economic development, better public schools and higher education.
