James Beard Foundation Scholarship Opens
The Kahala Hotel Sponsors $5000 Scholarship for KCC Culinary Student

Honolulu, HI...Continuing or newly enrolling students for the 2013/2014 school year at Kapiolani Community College’s Culinary Arts program may apply for a newly established $5000 scholarship sponsored by The Kahala Hotel and Resort through the James Beard Foundation, a national nonprofit organization that supports culinary excellence in America. Application information may be found at www.jamesbeard.org/scholarships beginning April 1, 2013. The deadline to apply for James Beard Foundation/Kahala scholarship is May 15, 2013.

The James Beard Foundation/Kahala Hotel & Resort Scholarship is the result of a major fundraising effort spearheaded by The Kahala during Bon Appétit, its fall 2012 month-long culinary tribute to iconic American chef and cookbook author Julia Child. The hotel’s first-ever James Beard Foundation Dinner was the brainchild of resort General Manager Roseann Grippo and coordinated by Hoku’s Restaurant Manager Dante Camara. The sold-out affair reunited chefs from around the country who had worked previously at The Kahala, including Ryan Loo (W Hotel Seattle), Colin Hazama (Sheraton Waikiki), Warren Uchida (Kapiolani Community College), and Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo (Young’s Market of Hawaii). Kahala’s in-house culinary team included Executive Chef Wayne Hirabayashi, Pastry Chef Michael Moorhouse, and Food and Beverage Director Todd Oldham.

The James Beard Foundation Scholarship Program awarded over $300,000 in educational scholarships in 2012, and over $4.2 million since its inception in 1991. The program helps aspiring culinary students realize their dreams by supporting them on a path to success in the rewarding world of the hospitality industry. The scholarship program is one of the Foundation’s educational pillars essential to the fulfillment of the organization’s mission to celebrate, nurture, and preserve America’s diverse culinary heritage and future. The James Beard Foundation was founded in 1986 and offers a variety of events and programs designed to educate, inspire, entertain, and foster a deeper understanding of our culinary culture.

Their scholarship program is administered by the Scholarship Management Services division of Scholarship America, a well-respected nonprofit organization that has helped award scholarships to over one million students. Applications for the James Beard Foundation scholarship sponsored by The Kahala will be received and evaluated by Scholarship America. Each student is rated according to a standardized system based on such factors as grade point average, extracurricular activities including work experience, letters of recommendation, and financial need. Qualified scholarship finalists are selected and their applications are then submitted to the James Beard Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee for final review.

“The Kahala is especially proud to sponsor a James Beard Foundation Scholarship in support of Kapiolani Community College’s Culinary Arts Program,” says Roseann Grippo. “As an industry leader in culinary excellence, The Kahala wants to inspire and support culinary students on their journeys to becoming America’s next great chefs.”

Kapiolani Community College Culinary Arts Program students currently enrolled and/or planning to enroll for the fall 2013 classes may apply online at www.jamesbeard.org/scholarships beginning April 1, 2013. Application deadline is May 15, 2013 and all scholarship application materials, including transcript, must be postmarked by May 15, 2013. Scholarship winners will be notified in August 2013.  Applicants for James Beard Foundation/Kahala Scholarship may also be eligible for other James Beard Foundation scholarships listed at their web site.
