PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY

CADENCE QUARTET -- STRING QUARTET PERFORMANCE*

On Sunday, January 17, at 3:00 p.m., in the Adult Reading Area, the Cadence Quartet, a local community quartet, will perform a variety of musical pieces, including Canon in D (Johann Pachelbel), Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (J.S. Bach), Yesterday (The Beatles), The Music of the Night (Andrew Lloyd Weber), Themes from Moldau (Bedrich Smetana), and others. Quartet members are Moriah Tom (violin), Sasha Himeno-Price (violin), Elton Masaki (viola), and Sofia Himeno-Price (cello).

FENG SHUI FOR HAWAII

On Sunday, February 7, at 2:00 p.m., in the Adult Reading Area, author Clear Englebert will discuss "feng shui for love and money," which is also the title of his latest book. With the assistance of Friends of Kaimuki Public Library (FKPL), copies of Feng Shui for Hawaii, Feng Shui for Hawaii Gardens, and Feng Shui for Love & Money, will be available for purchase by check or cash (exact change, please) for $20.00, $23.00, and $13.00, respectively. Prices include Hawaii general excise tax. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to FKPL for library support.

SUNDAY FAMILY STORY TIME*

Family story times featuring stories, rhymes, and crafts will be held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., starting January 10. All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

BOOK CLUB

Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and FKPL. There will be monthly discussion meetings on the second Friday morning of each month before the library opens from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Come to the library's front door on Koko Head Avenue before 9:30 to be let in. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance. Scheduled book discussions are:

January 8: A spool of blue thread (Anne Tyler) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable). Kaimuki Adult Reference Librarian Christin Lozano will talk about her experience in having her first children's book, Island Toes, published.

February 12: The space between us (Thrity N. Umrigar) -- HSPLS has print.

March 18: The alchemyst (Michael Scott) -- HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).

PHOTO EXHIBITS

An exhibit, "Ku I Ke Ao -- Be of the World," featuring photos taken by three independent study photography students at Kamehameha High School using digital and analog techniques, will be on display in the library lobby through Friday, January 8. The photos illustrate the points of view of the three young ladies from different islands who took them.

Later in January, students in Kamehameha High School photography classes and SEEQS Middle School in Kaimuki will collaborate on exhibiting their photos in the library. The photos will be produced using double exposure development and will show the points of view of these different groups of photographers.

FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

FKPL will hold a meeting of the general membership on Monday, January 25, at 6:00 p.m., in the FKPL book store at the east end of the library's basement. The meeting will be open to all interested individuals.

FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY BOOK STORE AND ONGOING BOOK SALE

FKPL's book store is open every Tuesday except holidays, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., in the east end of the library's basement: Paperbacks: $0.50 Hardcover: $1.00 Or priced as marked. Additionally CDs and DVDs are $1.00 each. Cash only, please.

The ongoing book sale also continues inside the library (along the wall that parallels Koko Head Avenue) during library open hours with the same great prices.

COMPUTER TUTORIALS

Sign up at the reference desk for Friday-morning (10:00 or 11:00 a.m.; 1 hour max) tutorials in essential computer use, e-mail, surfing the Web, Microsoft Office basics, or any other introductory computer-use topic of your choice. You need a valid HSPLS card to participate.

*SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS: LIBRARY PROGRAMS

Please call the library 2 weeks prior to any library program to request a sign-language interpreter or other special accommodation if needed.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

All public libraries will close for business at 5:00 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31. They will be closed on Friday, January 1, Saturday, January 2, and Sunday, January 3.

The bookdrops in the Kaimuki Public Library upper parking lot will be locked starting at 5:00 p.m. on December 31 and reopen at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, January 4. During that time, the book return by the front door will remain available for the return of books only. Library materials will not be due on the closure dates, so please wait until the library re-opens to return library materials. Thank you for your cooperation. Have a safe and enjoyable New Year!

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
