FIRST FRIDAY at HiSAM

Event: First Friday at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum with Ledward Kaapana

Location: Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM)

250 South Hotel St., Second Floor

Downtown Honolulu

Date: Friday, September 2, 2016

Time: 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM

Cost: free

Additional information: Live music featuring Ledward Kaapana, slack key guitar and ukulele master. Second floor courtyard (outdoors), chairs will be provided and Friends of the Hawaii State Art Museum will be selling beer and wine. Museum galleries will be open (entry and admission are always free), including the newest exhibit, "Accession", featuring recent acquisitions by the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the "I Love Art" hands-on activity room for kids. First Friday at HiSAM is a casual, family-friendly event.

Parking: across the street at Ali‘i Place (entrance at 1099 Alakea St.) or Iolani Palace.

EXHIBIT OPENING

Event: Exhibit Opening: Accession

Location: Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HiSAM)

250 South Hotel St., Second Floor

Downtown Honolulu

Date: Friday, September 2, 2016

Time: 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM

Cost: free

Additional information: Opening reception for "Accession", featuring recent acquisitions by the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts from exhibits across the state of Hawai‘i. Open to the public, this casual, family-friendly evening is a great way to meet local artists and arts enthusiasts! Includes live music featuring Ledward Kaapana, slack key guitar and ukulele master.

Museum galleries will be open (entry and admission are always free), including the "I Love Art" hands-on activity room for kids.

Event: Second Saturday at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum with the Hawaii Craftsmen

Location: 250 South Hotel St.

Multipurpose Room, First Floor

Date: Saturday September 10, 2016

Time: 11:00 am -- 3:00 pm

Cost: free

Additional information: The Hawaii Craftsmen will show you how to make your own statue out of paper and tape, or try making one out of wood! Fun for all ages. Museum galleries will be open (entry and admission are always free), including the "I Love Art" hands-on activity room for kids and Museum galleries will be open (entry and admission are always free), and the very popular exhibit "Ho‘omau: The Perpetuation of Kapa", showcasing contemporary Hawaiian barkcloth from the Art in Public Places Collection of the Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

MEET THE ARTIST

Event: Art Lunch at the Hawai‘i State Art Museum with G. Umi Kai

Location: 250 South Hotel St.

Multipurpose Room, First Floor

Date: Tuesday September 27, 2016

Time: 12:00 pm -- 1:00 pm

Cost: free

Additional information: Gordon ‘Umialiloalahanauokalakaua Kai will share his 45+ years of experience crafting na mea Hawai‘i, including na mea kaua (things of war) and implements of daily use (such as the pahoa (dagger), ihe (spear), hina‘i hinalea (fish trap) or poi pounder. Umi and his wife Janice are part of a small group of Native Hawaiian artists working to perpetuate the craft of making tools and weapons that were once essential to survival in these islands. Umi Kai will talk about the time-consuming process of transforming raw materials into a functional, high quality works of art and show examples of his craftsmanship.


Art Lunch at HiSAM is a monthly "meet the artist" lecture series that takes place on the last Tuesday of each month. Attendees are welcome to bring a lunch or buy lunch at Artizen (HiSAM's café, also on the first floor) to eat during the lecture.
