New York Song Stylist Karrin Allyson in Honolulu Concerts August 15 & 16

Return to Atherton Studio to show support for HPR

Jazz vocal sensation Karrin Allyson returns to HPR's Atherton Studio on August 15th and 16th for two intimate concerts she calls Ballads, Blues, and Beyond. The New York-based jazz singer and pianist is a long-time friend of the public radio station, which promoted her early in her career and where she staged her first Honolulu concert. Since then, she has headlined at some of the most prestigious jazz festivals and clubs in the country, and performed internationally in Brazil, Canada, Japan, Paris, and London. She is currently touring North America and Europe with a multi-generational, all-star band selected to celebrate the rich heritage of the world-renowned Newport Jazz Festival® on its 60th anniversary. For her return to the Atherton, she will be accompanied by her frequent guitarist Rod Fleeman and local bassist Bruce Hamada in a program of bossa nova tunes, ballads, pop classics, jazz standards, as well as a few new originals composed by Allyson herself.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling HPR (955-8821) during regular business hours. Prices are $60 general and $50 for station members. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawai‘i Public Radio Plaza, 738 Kaheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; the concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. A CD signing opportunity and reception with the artist immediately follow the performance.

The New York Times describes Allyson as "a no-frills singer with a feline touch and impeccable intonation." She is at home singing in English, French, Italian, and Portuguese, and is known for her wide-ranging repertoire, improvisational spontaneity, and unbridled, charismatic energy.

Allyson has released 14 albums, many under the Concord Jazz label. Four of them -- Ballads: Remembering John Coltrane (2001), Footprints (2006), Imagina: Songs of Brasil (2008), and ‘Round Midnight (2011) -- were nominated for Grammy Awards in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category.

Karrin (pronounced KAH-rin) Allyson spent her early years in Omaha, Nebraska, and began her musical training when she was six. Attracted to the music of Carole King, Melissa Manchester, Carly Simon, and Joni Mitchell, she sang pop tunes while playing the piano. She admits that she didn't discover jazz until attending the University of Nebraska, where she graduated with a degree in classical piano. Increasingly drawn to jazz, however, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she played in jazz clubs. It was in Minneapolis that she also met her long-time partner Bill McGlaughlin, current host of the weekday, one-hour public radio program Exploring Music (HPR-1, 2 p.m.).

To further her jazz career, Allyson subsequently moved to Kansas City, Kansas. Her self-produced debut album I Didn't Know About You led to a contract with Concord Records. In the late 1990s, Allyson and McLaughlin decided it was time to relocate to New York City. Though now residing in arguably the center of the jazz industry, she continues to tour extensively, spending about two-thirds of her time on the road. Her touring and teaching schedule, discography, and blog may be found at www.karrin.com.
