HPR Opens Summer Atherton Season with "Sweet Soul Music" May 16

Chris Vandercook presents revue of classic R&B with guest vocalists and horn section

HPR's Atherton Summer Season 2015 kicks off with "Sweet Soul Music," a musical celebration of the songs of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Smokey Robinson, and other classic artists from the glory days of American popular music. Guitarist, bandleader, and HPR morning show co-host Chris Vandercook has assembled three guest vocalists, the Powerhouse Horns, and his Chris Vandercook Band for this season opener on Saturday, May 16.

Tickets to "Sweet Soul Music" are $30 general, $25 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID. Reservations may be made at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

The featured vocalists are Melodie Soul, lead singer of Hawaiʻi's Blue Light Funk Band; Blue Light founder Gyn Brown, returning to Hawaiʻi from Houston for this performance; and Kyle Allen McCarty, who has just returned to the islands from a world tour as featured vocalist with the United States Air Force Tops in Blue show band.

"These are three terrific singers who work well together on stage and can deliver these great songs with skill and passion," Vandercook says. "We're lucky to find a new generation of singers who can deliver ‘old-school' soul classics this well. All the musicians are excited to be working with them, and to be putting together the kind of show that artists like James Brown, Sam and Dave, Ike and Tina, and so many others put on back in the day. Those artists set a standard that hasn't been matched since, and this show is a tribute to them."

Chris Vandercook is the guitarist and musical director of the show. Joshua Kaye will play piano and organ, with Ernie Provencher on bass and Peter Factora on drums. The Powerhouse Horns are Paul Stanley, saxophones; Stanton Haugen, trumpet; and Arthur Davis, trombone. All the musicians are seasoned veterans of concerts and nightclub shows in Hawai'i. "You can't do justice to these songs without great horns and a strong rhythm section," Vandercook says. "We have both, in support of some great singers and some classic songs, so it should be a very exciting show."

Vandercook and his band have done several Atherton concerts celebrating the best in American blues, jazz, and classic rhythm and blues. "Sweet Soul Music" on May 16, 2015 will be their tenth appearance in HPRʻs performance studio and is a reprise of their February 2014 concert at the Honolulu Museum of Art's Doris Duke Theater.
