Clarinet/violin/piano trio bring unique sound to Atherton Studio, June 30

Gunhwan Jung (clarinet), Rachel Saul (violin), and Yuka Yahagi (piano) bring the unique sonority of their chamber ensemble to HPR's intimate Atherton Studio on June 30. They will perform various classical and contemporary compositions, including the music of Edward Manukyan, Darius Milhaud, and Aram Khachaturian.

Reservations may be made online at or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID; online ticketing fees apply. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About the artists

Gunhwan Jung (clarinet) is originally from South Korea, where he obtained his Bachelor's degree in Clarinet Performance. He went on to receive his Master's and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Boston University in Clarinet Performance. He teaches at Manoa School of Music and the Arts and has taught since 1998 in his private clarinet studio in Boston; Seochu-gu Community Music Center in Seoul, Korea; Sangmeung University in Seoul; and Kwandong University in Gangneung, Korea. Jung has performed extensively, including in New York in the Chamber Music Series at Carnegie Hall and at Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center.

Rachel Saul (violin) is originally from Tucson, Arizona. She has been with the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra since 2012. Her additional orchestral experience includes performing with the Hawaii Opera Theatre, O‘ahu Choral Society, Maui Chamber Orchestra, Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, and Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Chamber music is Saul's passion and in addition to performances across North America and Europe, she has performed frequently as a guest artist at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She also enjoys performing jazz and pops at local venues. Saul teaches chamber music at Punahou Music School, founded and conducts the After-School Strings Program at the Mid-Pacific Institute Elementary School, is a teaching artist with Kalikolehua El Sistema Hawaii, and teaches a private violin studio.

Yuka Yahagi (piano) was born and raised in Japan. She started her piano studies at the age of three, finding success in local competitions. Throughout her studies and even after receiving her Masters degree in Piano Performance from University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, she has enjoyed performing both solo and collaborating in concerts at various venues in Honolulu. Yahagi is also an accomplished piano teacher. She currently teaches students of all ages at her Honolulu studio and at Punahou Music School. She is currently President of the Honolulu Piano Teachers Association and has been a board member for years. She was recognized as a top music teacher by Steinway & Sons in 2016.

About HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio

The Atherton Studio seats 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The Studio is available for rent for musical performances, community group meetings, and lectures. It is located in the HPR office and studio complex at 738 Kaheka Street, across from the Honolulu Don Quijote. Metered street parking is available, as are paid lots at the First Hawaiian Bank (Kapi‘olani branch) and in the Pan Am building.
