PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY

STAFF UPDATE AND SUNDAY STORY TIME*

Jenelle Nakamura, Kaimuki's Children's Librarian on temporary assignment, will be presenting the children's Story Times on Sundays, at 10:30 a.m., starting August 30.

Story time will continue on most Sundays except for Holidays. Kaimuki Public Library will be closed on Sunday, September 6, for the Labor Day Holiday weekend.

Children through age 7 accompanied by an adult are welcome.

BOOK CLUB

Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. There will be monthly discussion meetings on the second Friday morning of each month before the library opens from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Come to the library's front door on Koko Head Avenue before 9:30 to be let in. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance. Scheduled book discussions are:

September 11: A walk in the woods (Bill Bryson) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).

October 9: The lightning thief (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Book 1) (Rick Riordan) -- HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).

November 13: Good omens (Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and CD audiobook.

December 11: Orphan train (Christina Baker Kline) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and CD audiobook.

January 8: A spool of blue thread (Anne Tyler) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).

LIBRARY CARD SIGN-UP MONTH

September is Library Card Sign-Up Month: open up new worlds by using your HSPLS card to borrow books, CDs, DVDs, broadband-enabled netbook computers, e-books, and downloadable audiobooks. Access e-magazines, article databases, in-library wireless, online education courses, and much more! Most services and resources can be used for free.

If you don't have a card, drop by the library and apply for one. All you need is valid photo identification, proof of address, and a completed application. The first card is free for Hawaii residents. Three-month and five-year non-resident cards are also available for a fee.

Kids and teens (under 18) can get one too! To ensure a smooth application experience, children should be able to sign their names in the card signature block. A parent or legal guardian with current photo ID and proof of mailing address must accompany the child or teen.

Sunday Story Times will be on a break in August and start up again on September 13 at 10:30 a.m.
