PROGRAMS @ KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY

PUPPET SHOW AND WORKSHOP*

On Sunday, November 8, at 10:30 a.m., Bonnie Kim will put on a 40-minute performance of two Korean animal folktales using shadow puppets and marionettes in the Young Adult room. A 30-minute shadow puppet-making workshop will follow. Materials will be provided. Workshop registration for the first 20 in person or by phone starting October 18. Ages 4 and up. Children must be accompanied by adult. Sponsored by Friends of the Library of Hawai‛i.

Ms. Kim holds a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and teaches drama, puppetry, masks, creative dance, and recycle art for various arts organizations in Hawaii. She is a teaching artist on Artistic Teaching Partner roster with Arts Education Program of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts as well as an artist for the Statewide Cultural Extension Program with the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College.

TALES OF THE IRISH WITH NIALL DE BÚRCA*

On Sunday, November 15, at 1:00 p.m., internationally renowned storyteller Niall de Búrca will present a variety of tales from Ireland using his unique storytelling style for 45 minutes in the Young Adult room. All ages welcome. Young children must be accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.

Sponsored by the Friends of the Library of Hawai‘i, Hawaii State Federal Credit Union, HEI Charitable Foundation, Meadow Gold Dairies, HMS Host, Hansen Distribution Group, Roberts Hawaii, Toshiba Business Solutions, and Aloha United Way. This cultural program is a production of the University of Hawaii at Manoa Outreach College's Statewide Cultural Extension Program with additional funding provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the University of Hawaii.

GIFT WRAPPING WORKSHOP*

On Tuesday, November 17, at 6:00 p.m., Eco-crafter Evelyn Nakamura will teach attendees how to make 20 ties using Japanese furoshiki wrapping cloths. Register by phone or at the reference desk. Attendance limited to 20. No charge. Materials will be provided, including a souvenir furoshiki. Recommended for adults. Sponsored by Friends of Kaimuki Public Library.

DISPLAY ON CREATING A PICTURE BOOK

In celebration of Picture Book Month, the library will be hosting a special display on the process of creating a picture book. Check out this display in the Adult Reading Room's glass case during the month of November. Mahalo to Dave DeLuca of local publisher Bess Press and artist Mariko Merritt for creating the display for our community to enjoy!

SUNDAY STORY TIME*

Storytimes are being held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Children through age 7 accompanied by an adult are welcome.

BOOK CLUB

Interested readers are invited to join the Kaimuki Public Library Book Club along with volunteers from the Friends of the Library of Hawaii and Friends of Kaimuki Public Library. There will be monthly discussion meetings on the second Friday morning of each month before the library opens from 9:30 to 11:00 am. Come to the library's front door on Koko Head Avenue before 9:30 to be let in. Participants are encouraged to borrow and read the books in advance. Scheduled book discussions are:

November 13: Good omens (Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and CD audiobook.

December 11: Orphan train (Christina Baker Kline) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and CD audiobook.

January 8: A spool of blue thread (Anne Tyler) - HSPLS has e-book, print, and audiobook (CD and downloadable).

FRIENDS OF KAIMUKI PUBLIC LIBRARY (FKPL) ONGOING BOOK SALE

Check out the FKPL ongoing book sale in the library along the wall that parallels Koko Head Avenue, against the window near the adult new books. Paperbacks: $0.50 Hardcover: $1.00 Or priced as marked. Place your cash payment in the black cash box attached to the end of the book case. Proceeds go toward funding library programs, books, furniture, public office supplies (tape, glue, staples), and much more. Thank you for your support!

COMPUTER TUTORIALS

Sign up at the reference desk for Friday-morning (10:00 or 11:00 a.m.; 1 hour max) tutorials in essential computer use, e-mail, surfing the Web, Microsoft Office basics, or any other introductory computer-use topic of your choice. You need a valid HSPLS card to participate.

*SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS: LIBRARY PROGRAMS

Please call the library 2 weeks prior to any library program to request a sign-language interpreter or other special accommodation if needed.

The library will be closed on Wednesday, November 11 (Veterans' Day) and Thursday, November 26 (Thanksgiving).

Library Cards
You may apply for a library card at any Hawaii public library. The initial card is FREE for Hawaii residents. Cards are also free for military personnel and their dependents with a copy of orders. The resident card replacement fee is $5.00. Resident library cards must be renewed every five years. There is no charge for the renewal.
