Hawai‘i Public Radio Earns 4th Consecutive 4-Star Rating from Charity Navigator

Hawaiʻi Public Radio's sound fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent charity evaluator. This is the fourth consecutive time that HPR has earned this top distinction.

"Hawaiʻi Public Radio's coveted 4-star rating puts it in a very select group of high-performing charities," according to Michael Thatcher, President & CEO of Charity Navigator.

In his congratulatory letter to HPR, Thatcher wrote, "Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that your organization adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. Only 9% of the charities we rate have received at least 4 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Hawaii Public Radio outperforms most other charities in America. This 'exceptional' designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Hawaii Public Radio from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust." HPR President and General Manager Michael Titterton said, "This unexpected honor from Charity Navigator quadruples the pride we share with our members in our unique community-building enterprise. The 13,000 HPR donors, especially those who have trusted us with ongoing monthly contributions and the nearly 600 new members who came on board during our recent fund drive, have already shown they believe in our mission. This fourth consecutive top rating should give them even more confidence that their hard-earned dollars are being used efficiently and responsibly."

HPR's rating information is available free of charge at www.charitynavigator.org.

Since 2002, using objective, data-driven analysis, Charity Navigator has awarded only the most fiscally responsible organizations a 4-star rating. In 2011, Charity Navigator added 17 metrics, focused on governance and ethical practices as well as measures of openness, to its ratings methodology. These "Accountability & Transparency" metrics, which account for 50 percent of a charity's overall rating, reveal which charities have "best practices" that minimize the chance of unethical activities and whether they freely share basic information about their organization with their donors and other stakeholders.
