  • Chaminade University Receives $1.5 Million Gift To Create Signature Student Leadership Development Program

Chaminade University has announced it has received $1.5 million from the Marianist Province of the United States to create a center that will offer a signature four-year leadership development program for undergraduate students. Slated to launch in the fall of 2018, the Marianist Center for Student Leadership will serve as an educational hub featuring curricula based on Marianist, Catholic and Hawaiian values as well as the principles of ethical leadership.

"We are so very grateful for this generous monetary gift from the Marianist Province," said Chaminade University President Dr. Lynn M. Babington. "At Chaminade, we believe that students have the capacity to develop and practice their own leadership identity based on a solid foundation. The Marianist Center for Student Leadership will deliver a core set of content and experiences through which students will learn about leadership models and develop the skills they need to positively impact and transform the world around them."

The new program will afford students the opportunity to practice effective, ethical leadership in their current role as students, in civic life and service to the community, and in their future careers.

"We currently sponsor a number of leadership opportunities for undergraduate students hosted by various divisions across campus, such as campus ministry, student engagement, athletics, entrepreneurship, residential life, student ambassador programs, student government and peer tutoring," Babington added. "While each provides leadership opportunities for students, there is no consistency or coordination between programs; no common mission, goals, curricula or experiences. Our new Center for Student Leadership will bring our many school programs together through a cohesive leadership philosophy that will groom our students for their post-graduate careers and to serve their communities."

Students who complete the four-year program will earn a certificate of leadership development.
