A progressive public elementary school. Opened in 1912 and personally dedicated by Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani1838-1917, the last reigning Hawaiian monarch.

Our Mission Statement: Recognizing that each student is a unique individual, our mission is to guide and nurture students to be: Caring, healthy in body, mind, and spirit, successful in living and learning, and to have strong inner character.

The Legacy of Queen Lydia Kamaka'eha Lili'uokalani1838-1917

Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani Elementary School (QLS) is a small progressive Title I school in the heart of Kaimuki which consistently meets AYP (Annual Yearly Progress), is in good standing, and has unconditional status. They have an extremely dedicated group of faculty and staff who work hard for the good of all of the students.

Fascinating facts about the school:
  • School personally dedicated by Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani on April 12, 1912.
  • Property once housed a small zoo, home to exotic creatures, not all of them authentic. The resident "zebra" was revealed as a donkey when rain washed away its stripes.
  • A Time Capsule was placed in the pedestal of the Queen's bronze sculpture (below) in 1987, the Diamond Jubilee 75th Anniversary.

Other Notes of Interest

  • Mural on right was created by students, parents, staff, and friends of QLS to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the dedication of the school on April 12, 1992. click here for big image
  • In 1997, 85th Anniversary, the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation Good Ideas Grant enabled creation of 10 Hawaiian quilts. Students from each grade level drew designs based on stories they were told of the Queen. Each class selected one design they all liked that best represented her life. Quilts are presently displayed in the school cafeteria.
  • In 2002, 90th Anniversary, a Gala Evening event combining the anniversary and the May Day program on May 24, 2002.
  • In 2007, 95th Anniversary, celebration included a traditional Hawaiian May Day program & Hawaiian luncheon. The Student Council donated a table and decorations for the Queen's bust located in the Administrative Office.
  • In 2012, 100th Anniversary!
  • Abraham Lincoln Gettysburg Tablet. Located on the Koko Head side of the present Administration Building, is a gift from The Waialae, Kaimuki and Palolo Improvement Club on February 3, 1913.

  • The Cornerstone of the old building is now in the corner of the present basketball court
