VOTE LYLA BERG FOR LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR!

Lyla's Berg Bio
I am blessed to have had the guidance of my two loving parents while growing up in Hawai`i during the time of Statehood. As a first-generation American and first college graduate in my family, I owe my life-long curiosity and interest in history, world culture and the arts to my genealogy and family heritage.

My fondest memory as a child is walking along Waikiki Beach holding my dad s hand as he told me stories about the ocean, the people, and the aina of old Hawai i. He knew a lot about many places. He left his hometown of Bocholt, Germany in the mid 1920 s to follow his dream of one day reaching America. His mother was a strong German woman of Dutch ancestry and his father was from the Alsace border between France and Germany.

My mother grew up in Manila during WW II. Her mother was a spunky Visayan island girl who raised 12 children! They taught me tenacity, the importance of family and maintaining a connection with community, and they gave me a joyful Filipino spirit. My maternal grandfather was from mainland China. He taught mother the value of hard work and having dreams, and she passed this on to my brother and I.

My education was very important to both my parents. We traveled extensively as a family and because my father spoke seven languages and my mother spoke four, my brother and I grew up comfortable in almost any country or community in which we found ourselves. Though my first language was Spanish, my father s German roots drew us to Europe during our school breaks, and German became the language that I spoke during the summer months. It was in high school at Punahou that I started learning French and further developed my proficiency for languages while studying in Salzburg Austria during my college years. Perhaps that s why my professional career as an educator began with a position in the Hawaii DOE as a German language teacher at Kailua High School.

My years on Molokai as teacher and Vice-principal at Molokai Intermediate & High School further anchored my appreciation for learning and community. Raising goats, turkeys, and cattle helped me to see the value of rural living and sustainable agriculture -- and the satisfaction of working the aina. My most treasured birthday gift from those days is the leather saddle that my brother gave me so I could barrel race without borrowing someone else s!

Returning to Oahu and becoming the Principal of Kailua Intermediate School affored me the opportunity to bring an even larger community of people together in common purpose for children; our future. That goal was further realized in 1996 when I founded Kids Voting Hawai`i. The organization provides K-12 students with the information and practical experience needed to participate as responsible citizens and to sustain America s democracy.

In my current role as State Representative from the 18th District and Vice-Chair of the House Education Committee, as well as the community and national work in which I am involved, I have an ever-deepening commitment to the now-abbreviated civic mission once mandatory in public education. I am an active member of Civic Canopy -- a national network of partners working to build stronger neighborhoods, healthier communities, and a more civil society by empowering average citizens, traditionally having no political voice, to engage in the democratic process leading to local problem solving.

Some of the most personally rewarding experiences of my life have come from working with my Punahou Schools alumni and other volunteers during the Legislative Interims of 2007, ‘08 and ‘09 with rural school principals in South Africa and China through Teacher Without Borders. You can view a short video about my 2008 experiences with schools in South Africa with my Punahou colleagues here, read about my 2009 experiences in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, South Africa here and view several photos here.

Most of all, as a consequence of my mixed ethnic heritage and my professional work with state, national and international organizations and at the grass roots, I am willing to listen carefully to different perspectives. Even though people won t always agree on everything, I believe that with willingness, there can be resolutions to almost any troubling situation. These are the values I practice in my personal and professional life, in my business, and they are the values that I will bring to the office of Lt. Governor.

Thank you for your interest in my campaign and for taking your valuable time to learn more about me.

Sincerely,
Lyla Berg
