Plays HPR's Atherton Summer Concert Series July 6

The Summer Concert Series at HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio continues with folk blues/rock band The Chames Gang on Saturday, July 6.

Featuring Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning guitarist Larry Dupio, The Chames Gang returns to town to play original songs from Chames' album Lightning Strikes Hilo, and showcase their classic rock and blues favorites. Attendees will get a full dose of rock, blues, and driving bass lines in a show that is sure to please.

Reservations may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID; online service fees apply. The Atherton Studio is located at Hawaiʻi Public Radio, 738 Kāheka Street. Doors open at 7:00 p.m.; music begins at 7:30 p.m.

About the artists

Ian Chames (bass) came into music by way of brass instruments, with trombone being his original "axe." He has been performing bass locally since the early 90's, playing with a number of rock and blues bands over the years including St. Funk, The Strangers, Rocket Science, and The Trailer Park Romeos.

Larry Dupio (guitar) graduated from Farrington High School, served in the Navy during the Vietnam era, and earned a music degree from Leeward Community College. During his ten years living in the Pacific Northwest, Dupio won Guitar Center's "King of the Blues' contest in Portland, Oregon. He later returned to Hawai‘i, and in 2018 he won a Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award for Rock Album of the Year.

Maurice "Mofessor" McConnell (keyboards) started playing professionally at the age of 15. He is a multi-instrumentalist appearing on numerous albums internationally, including Thomas Mapfumo's Rise Up. More recently, he has performed with acts including Tavana and Guidance Band.

Scott Shafer (drums) began playing drums at age 14 and eventually earned a degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. After returning home to Honolulu, he has performed in local theatre productions and as a freelance musician, and has taught private instruction for over thirty years.





About HPR's Atherton Performing Arts Studio

The Atherton Studio seats 75 people and is home to a magnificent Bösendorfer concert grand piano. The Studio is available for rent for musical performances, community group meetings, and lectures. It is located in the HPR office and studio complex at 738 Kaheka Street, across from the Honolulu Don Quijote. Metered street parking is available, as are paid lots at the First Hawaiian Bank (Kapi‘olani branch) and in the Pan Am building.
