Hawaiian Style Band Joins HPR for Two Events, July 17 and 20

HPR welcomes local favorites Hawaiian Style Band for two events in the Atherton Performing Arts Studio in July.

On Wednesday, July 17 at 6 p.m., HPR's Paige Okamura (DJ Mermaid) will host a talk story session with Hawaiian Style Band. The discussion will explore how the band was first conceived, their creative process, and the evolution of their musical influences. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session. A limited number of early bird tickets are available for $10; general admission is $15; online service fees apply. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m., the band will play a concert as part of HPR's Summer Concert Series. This will be a reunion performance for one of Hawai‘i's most beloved groups, in their debut performance at the Atherton. The evening will feature the full original lineup (details below), playing in an "unplugged" style. Tickets are $25 general, $20 for HPR members, and $15 for students with ID; online service fees apply. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Hawaiian Style Band, led by Rob Burns, Wade Cambern and Bryan Kessler, redefined contemporary Hawaiian music in the early 1990s. They offered a fresh musical perspective on local culture with original compositions about living Hawaiian style--about island romance, talking story, ‘ohana, and sovereignty. The multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning band was conceptualized as a revolving band, a collaboration of more than fifty musicians over the course of its three albums: Vanishing Treasures, Rhythm of the Ocean, and ‘Ohana.

Reservations may be made online at www.hprtickets.org or by calling the station (955-8821) during regular business hours.

About the artists

Wade Cambern -- guitar and vocals

Cambern has enjoyed a rich career as composer and lyricist of beloved songs such as "Let's Talk Story," "Rhythm of the Ocean," "Live A Little," and "Love and Honesty." Cambern has collaborated with many of Hawai‘i's iconic musical figures, including Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole, with whom he and Bryan co-wrote "Living In A Sovereign Land." The sounds and themes of life in Hawai‘i profoundly influenced Wadeʻs musical identity in his solo album A Blue Canoe and the 2014 Hōkū-nominated Hawaiian Style Band album Hānau Hou, co-produced with Garin Poliahu.

Bryan Kessler -- guitar

As an active guitarist, Kessler has toured with Nā Leo, Jake Shimabukuro, Hawaii Pops, and Lion King, as well other artists from pop to jazz. Bryan has developed a playing style that reflects both the Hawaiian Islands and the urban sound of Philadelphia, his homeland. Along with Wade Cambern, Kessler wrote and produced Hawaiian Style Band's first three albums. Bryan has gone on to produce and perform on twelve albums in Japan and Hawai‘i. He contributed a selection to the 2005 compilation album Slack Key Volume 2 which went on to win Hawai‘i's first Grammy Award.

Robi Kahakalau -- vocals

For the 26th anniversary celebration of Vanishing Treasures, Kahakalau joins Kessler and Cambern in delivering the distinctive vocal harmony of Hawaiian Style Band. She has released five solo albums, earning her multiple Hōkū awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year. Her collaborative project with Sean Na‘auao was among the finalists for a Grammy Award. Kahakalau has appeared as featured guest vocalist more often than any Hawaiian recording artist and has toured and performed with legends like Keali‘i Reichel, the Ka‘au Crater Boys, Hapa, Willie K, Henry Kapono, and the Makaha Sons.
